Assistant Manager of Safety & Security 


The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Manager of Safety & Security, the Assistant Manager will assist with the daily operations of the department, along with overseeing the security team and electronic resources. You will also develop and implement safety and security programs to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, collections, building, and other assets of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

You Will:

  • Be responsible for security and safety in galleries, theaters, retail spaces, outdoor and other assembly areas.
  • Assist with managing the security team and providing leadership to all museum staff in security.
  • Assist with developing the team structure by hiring and training security personnel.
  • Assist with lead training of visitor services, theater, and other public-facing personnel in the areas of security and safety.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repairs of all security systems including the access control, cameras, house radios, and public safety BDA systems.
  • Assist with implementing a robust emergency preparedness and response program to prepare for a variety of possible scenarios including earthquakes, fire, active shooter, civil unrest, HazMat, etc.
  • Participate in training for all museum personnel on a periodic basis and conduct annual drills in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Assist with purchasing, distributing, and maintaining emergency supplies.
  • Assist with scheduling staff for major public programs and events.
  • Assist in developing and implementing crowd control procedures for large gatherings.
  • Hire and coordinate supplemental security personnel from third-party vendors.
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in a security leadership position with a museum, public performance venue, or similar institution.
  • Experience managing and maintaining access control and CCTV systems.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of security systems.
  • Knowledge of law related to security operations in public facilities in California.
  • Knowledge of Cal-OSHA regulations, fire department regulations, and other health and safety regulations.
  • On the spot problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work a variable schedule to include weekends and holidays.

The expected base salary range for this role is $64,480 to $66,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
