Job Summary:

The Director, Awards, Production, and Events is an integral member of the senior Academy Awards and Events department. In addition to overseeing the organization’s tentpole event experiences, the Director serves as departmental point person on budgets and is a key voice/leader in departmental processes.

Specifically, the Director must display a proven ability to conceive, develop, create and execute high-level, world-class, year-round events such as Student Awards, Nicholl Live Read, Governors Awards, Member Reception, Nominations, Nominees Luncheon, Scientific and Technical Awards, Nominee Dinners, International Film Reception, and Oscars Governors Ball. Each marquis event consistently represents the Academy’s brand and supports its core strategic goals.

The Director is responsible for the management and innovation of the core operational functions of these events, direct reporting to the SVP, Awards, Events and Production while collaborating with Academy leadership, Governors, and other department leads (including but not limited to Business Development, Membership, Programming) and all hired vendors. The Director is an expert and comfortable managing event budgets as set forth by the SVP/CFO.

The Director will also support member-related activities in Los Angeles, New York, and London, as well as work closely with the Academy Museum Events team (as needed) to provide consultation, direction, and support as it relates to the Museum Events department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive the operational planning process of Academy tent pole events –across a multi-year horizon - working in close concert with all key stakeholders.
  • Integrate core operational functions in order to drive increased efficiency, and results as well as assure brand messaging. This includes areas of venue/site planning, budgeting, catering, decor, team operations contractor management/procurement, and long range planning
  • Serve as the central point person for all Academy events, providing seamless communication with all key stakeholders.
  • Develop the respect and trust of key members & internal departments upon whom this role is dependent. Drive positive team dynamics.
  • Ability to manage multiple event projects at the same time across variable planning cycles, while staying on time and on budget
  • Provide coaching, leadership, and act as a mentor for the team, particularly mentoring junior staff.
  • Identify partnerships and collaborations with vendors that properly promote the Academy brand.
  • Serve as departmental point person on annual budgets
  • Be a key voice/leader in departmental processes.

  • A clear skill for working collaboratively across our matrixed organization, while being able to drive timely decisions and positive outcomes.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of demonstrated expertise in entertainment event planning, including long-term strategy, negotiations, budgeting and setting timelines
  • Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills. Able to manage multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Proactive in asking questions when needed and resourceful in solving problems.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office.
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, as well as late hours on short notice.
