Starting Pay: $37.3415 Hourly ($77,670)
After 1st Year: $38.6515 Hourly ($80,395)
After 2nd Year: $41.1161 Hourly ($85,522)
After 3rd Year: $41.5478 Hourly ($86,419)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Seven (7) years’ experience in the maintenance and operations of locomotives, preferably steam -OR- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with three (3) years' work experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license;
- Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and irregular hours;
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs;
- May be required to wear a prescribed work uniform.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Manages the maintenance and operation of steam and diesel locomotives; performs very skilled technical work in the repair and maintenance of steam and diesel locomotives, steam traction engines, other steam equipment, and other related equipment; works under general supervision; performs other duties as required.
STATEMENT OF TASKS:
- Manages, maintains and services locomotives, coaches, train operational equipment and other park related equipment;
- Inspects and evaluates condition and safety of locomotives and all railroad equipment;
- Ensures that all equipment meets operational safety standards in coordination with regulatory agencies;
- Replaces, repairs or fabricates working parts of steam or diesel-powered locomotives or other park equipment;
- Repairs, modifies or installs hydraulic or pneumatic air brake safety systems;
- Conducts in-service training sessions for employees and instructs employees in all phases of repair and installation of equipment;
- Performs such maintenance functions as dropping wheels, jacking locomotive, changing tires, grinding valves, changing brass bearings, maintaining cylinders and steam chests etc.;
- Performs routine boiler washing and maintenance inspections as required;
- Maintains switches, trestles, rails, ties and related equipment within the railroad;
- Utilizes outside sources for certain repairs, parts and/or services that not capable of being done in-house;
- Ensures public and employee safety;
- Prepares reports and maintains records as required by local, state and federal agencies.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Familiar with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and regulations as they apply to Steam Locomotives and Tourist Railroad Operations;
- Knowledge of steam and diesel locomotives;
- Ability to perform necessary maintenance and repairs to all railroad and other equipment and related rolling stock;
- Ability to do refined technical mechanical, metal and wood repairs, rebuilding and maintenance work to locomotives and related equipment;
- Ability to deal effectively with the public;
- Ability to maintain good working relationships;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion
- Ability to attend work regularly and work under stressful conditions.
