SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Vice President of Philanthropy, the Director of Development will serve in a key leadership role to develop and execute a strategic engagement plan that leads to broader awareness and deeper understanding of Opportunity Village’s mission and program portfolio, while unleashing the power of philanthropy to meet annual and multi-year revenue-growth. The Director of Development will lead the Fundraising staff to maintain and grow the OV Foundation through the solicitation of major gifts, special events, corporate and foundation support, and annual appeals. The Director of Development also plays an integral role at Opportunity Village, serving as the coordinator of the Capital Campaign.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Create and execute a comprehensive development plan that builds strategic, collective fundraising capability needed to generate diverse and sustainable revenues including Annual Giving, Endowments, Legacy Giving, Grants, Event Fundraising and Capital Campaigns.
  2. Identify, manage, and solicit current and new high-level prospects, to increase the number of corporate, foundation, and individual donors and unrestricted donations to meet specific annual fundraising targets.
  3. Lead fundraising with a particular focus on direct response, mid-level giving, and major giving.
  4. Provide leadership, training, coaching, guidance, and support to the Fundraising team.
  5. Use Donor Perfect software to track, solicit and report on all prospects.
  6. Work closely with the marketing team to support the creation and maintenance of communication platforms, presentations, committee and donor presentations, and reports.
  7. Support preparation of accurate, accessible, and attractive quarterly reports and campaign progress reports for the leadership team and board committees.
  8. Assist in budget preparation.
  9. Cultivate and maintain donor relationships, including:
  10. Building and managing a broad base of individual donors by conducting in-person cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship meetings with donors and prospects, special events, and other strategies.
  11. Making donor stewardship a priority by setting the overarching direction, establishing metrics, and leading donor cultivation and solicitation efforts, modeling balanced persistence and the ability to close the deal. Securing and stewarding major individual donors and corporate sponsors.
  12. Collaborate with internal teams and external corporate audiences to engage donors and prospects strategically in OV’s programming and events to enhance engagement and the value proposition.
  13. Serve as liaison to the Legacy Society committee to inspire maximum participation and engagement.
  14. Work with the Finance Department to reconcile financial reporting.
  15. Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization’s values, vision, and mission.
  16. Keep abreast of developments in fund development and philanthropy with a keen awareness of local, regional, and national donor attributes and giving seasons.
  17. Research and qualify prospects appropriately aligned with support of programs and initiatives.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, co-workers, and supervisors (verbal and written) and work across organizational divisions to maximize results.
  • Goal-orientated with social, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the six-figure range.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the market and competition.
  • Develops and implements cost savings measures; conserves resources; focuses on budget and cost savings.
  • Displays a high level of integrity and professionalism; creative, flexible, and resourceful.
  • Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and securing major and lead gifts; developing and sustaining strong relationships with the Board of Directors, program leadership, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to secure financial support from diverse sources – including major donors, foundations, and corporations.
  • Strong external networking, relationship, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and follow-through in executing projects from the initial stage through completion, including tracking and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with donors via all communication channels (phone, in-person, email, and social media).
  • High proficiency in fundraising CRMs; Donor Perfect preferred.
  • Ability to use donor databases and set strategies based on data analytics.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Fundraising, Nonprofit Administration, Business, or related field or equivalent.
  • Required: Minimum of five (5) years experience as a development professional, including senior responsibilities.
  • Required: Experience working with high-level decision-makers, trustees, and other stakeholders.
  • Required: Three to five years in a leadership position 
  • Required: Demonstrated experience in the phases of capital campaign fundraising: leadership, major, and community gift phases.
  • Preferred: Five to seven years of successful experience in major or planned gift fundraising, annual funds, and direct response, with demonstrated results in personally identifying, asking for, and securing major gifts.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of local philanthropic community.
  • Preferred: Experience with Donor Perfect or other donor database software.
  • Preferred: Experience working with individuals with disabilities
