Arborist

Description

This position is for the specially trained professional who deals with the art and science of planting, caring, maintaining, and diagnosing trees, shrubberies, and other woody plant life on City grounds including right-of-ways. The Arborists will assess the condition of woody plants by providing a diagnosis for potential diseases while ensuring proper care and maintenance. Tree pruning and trimming, drought mitigation, fertilization, application of insect and disease control products will be required. Essential duties include:

  • Performs various tree maintenance tasks including trimming, pruning, planting and removing damaged or diseased trees.
  • Applies pesticides as required using appropriate spraying techniques.
  • Repairs damaged trees using cables and other appropriate techniques.
  • Operates heavy tree-related equipment, including, but not limited to, saws, stump removers, hi-rangers, aerial lifts, spraying equipment and grapple trucks. Reports indications of mechanical problems with equipment to supervisors.
  • Performs manual labor related to equipment operation and maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for the operation of a variety of medium to heavy construction tasks and equipment.
  • Completes routine reports on work performed and equipment used as requested.
  • Assures the maintenance of safe work areas and equipment, promptly corrects work hazards, as necessary. Investigates and reports all work related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs.
  • Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
  • Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned.
  • The ability to lead, and organize activities each Arbor Day.
  • Coordination of tree studies and implementation of recommendations given.
 
Position Requirements
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software.
  • Knowledge of State requirements to possess a pesticide license.
  • Knowledge of and skills required for tree maintenance.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and implantation of solutions.
  • Skill in prioritizing, directing and coordinating the work of city personnel.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in utilizing GIS software.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in communicating with the general public.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two year degree in a related field and two years of related experience, or a four year degree in related field and one year of related experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an arboricultural field. Certified Arborist preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia. Class B or Class A license, preferred.
  • Minimum one year experience in the operation of medium to heavy duty vehicles and maintenance equipment.
  • Minimum one year experience in the proper use and handling of pesticides.
  • Current possession of State Pesticide Operator’s License, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Minimum of three years of customer service experience, including the ability to deal tactfully with the public on sensitive issues.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime hours as planned.
  • Ability to work unplanned, emergent after-hours as necessitated by weather/accident situations.

Hourly Rate of Pay minimum pay of $21.99 per hour with competitive benefits package
