Job Summary

The HR Business Partner (HRBP) works with Operations Management to align business objectives with employees and management in designated business units. The position partners with Operations to deliver value-added HR support to management and employees, reflecting the business objectives of the organization. The HRBP will gather and maintain current operational, financial, cultural and competitive knowledge of a designated business area in order to provide strategic guidance on all issues related to The Kahala Hotel & Resort colleagues.

 
Position Requirements

Essential Functions

  • Consults with line management, providing HR guidance when appropriate.
  • Recruits for assigned business units
  • Provides day-to-day performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).
  • Ability to manage to a Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations in response to issues.
  • Advise leadership on hiring and terminations
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.
  • Provide guidance on employee behavior and conflict resolution
  • Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled operations meetings with respective business units.
  • Provides guidance and input on business unit restructures, workforce planning and succession planning.
  • Mentor managers on employee development best practices
  • Identifies training needs for business units and then coordinates training with Director of Learning and Development Participates. Follows up to ensure training objectives are met.
  • Researches, develops and recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of the department and services performed.
  • Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR group to develop solutions, programs and policies.
  • Promote diversity awareness in hiring practices
  • Other responsibilities include: assist with the publication of the quarterly colleague newsletter, prepare monthly incentive letters for Non Bargaining Unit colleagues, handles all requisitioning of supplies for the department, processes room accommodation requests.
  • Completes a variety of administrative projects/duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Experience/Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with talent acquisition for exempt and non-exempt employees
  • Work in a unionized environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies.
  • Ability to acquire a thorough understanding of the organization's business operations, jobs, qualifications, compensation practices, and the administrative practices related to those factors.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, recruitment, compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, employee and union relations, diversity, performance management, and federal and state respective employment laws.

 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of direct HR functional experience (labor/employee relations, talent acquisition/retention, benefit/payroll knowledge, compensation, colleague engagement, etc.) to included resolving complex employee relations issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field, or 5 years of HR experience
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), PHR or SPHR preferred

 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Report all suspicious persons or activities and hazardous or unsafe conditions to the Security Department.
  • Provide instruction and/or guidance for guest and employee safety in fire or other emergency situations.
  • Respond to guest questions. Provide guest assistance, direction and information as requested when working in public areas.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with peers and superiors both within the department and with other departments.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources

 

Mental Capacity & Organizational Skill Requirements:

 

  • Ability to pay attention to detail, work in a fast paced environment handle multiple tasks and have a high level of patience.
  • Ability to effectively deal with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact and diplomacy to diffuse anger, collect accurate information and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to effectively utilize standard office equipment such as a copy machine, telephone and computer.
  • Ability to access, understand and accurately input information using a moderately complex computer system utilizing various software such as Word, Excel.

 

Communication Requirements:

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively speak in public.
