Primary Function:

A mechanical engineer is responsible for design and development of mechanical systems and hardware used in aerospace applications. This includes performing research, definition, design, prototyping, verification, and manufacturing support of mechanical assemblies in new and existing products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, modify, and release mechanical parts and assemblies for use in aircraft environments (high altitudes, high moisture, extreme temperatures)
  • Design for certification requirements of RTCA/DO-160G such as temperature, vibration, shock, fluid susceptibility, and corrosion requirements
  • Execute trade studies, component selection, 3D modeling, and drafting of mechanical designs
  • Perform thermal, flow, structural, and dynamic analyses using simulation tools
  • Perform prototyping, characterization, test, RCA, and modification of designs
  • Create documentation such as test plans, test reports, and material compliance reports
  • Support manufacturing for current designs
  • Generate and present technical material to satisfy design review and formal process requirements
  • Apply risk management practices to ensure projects are on time, within budget and fulfilling all contractual and technical requirements
  • Perform design work under AS9100 QMS processes and in accordance with design and development procedures
  • Support regulatory and DO-160G certification testing
  • Travel to support test and project needs (Less than 5% travel)

Qualifications and Experience:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an ABET accredited college
  • 3 years of engineering experience in product development (2 years with MS)
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling
  • Expertise in hands-on prototyping, fabrication and use of test equipment such as temperature chambers and accelerometers
  • Ability to read, understand, and comply with written design process requirements
  • Self-driven, methodical thinker, able to excel with minimal supervision
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including ability to present technical information in team environment

 

Preferred

  • Familiarity with ASME standards, military specifications, and manufacturing standards
  • Proficiency in use of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Experience with aircraft mechanical design such as fuselage structures and radomes
  • Experience with RF concepts like waveguides, cable loss, and phase noise
  • Proficiency in fabrication and metal work for prototyping applications
  • Experience with SolidWorks cable routing
  • Proficiency in Creo modeling software
  • Experience in an AS9100 QMS and design gate development processes
  • Experience with DO-160G electrical and environmental requirements

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and/or arms to pull handles and push buttons and reach objects. Requirements may also include climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
