Description

Carlington Community Health Centre is looking for a talented and motivated Community Chef to join their Health Promotion and Counselling Team to provide leadership in the Westboro/Van Lang Community Kitchen. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about good food, and works within the frameworks of community development and health equity. The Community Chef has a good understanding for the power of food and the many positive impacts it can bring: from supporting the health and social wellbeing of our community members, to building strong social ties to supporting local farmers. The Community Chef will possess strong leadership skills balanced with an ability to create a supportive environment for a diverse team of volunteers, enabling them to hone in on their own food and leadership skills.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meal Planning and Preparation:

  • Plan menus for the Community Meal program reflect our philosophy and commitment to healthy food.
  • Support and oversee a team of volunteers.
  • Provide basic training and instruction to volunteers.
  • Provide leadership to the community meal preparation.
  • Oversee health and safety in the kitchen.
  • Attend and support local Kitchen Committee meetings.

Coordination of the Kitchen:

  • Source, order, and manage inventory of food for meals and basic kitchen supplies.
  • Liaise with other agencies and businesses for procurement and partnerships.
  • Manage annual budget for meals, including food for meals and supplies.
  • Ensure high standard of health and safety in the kitchen space.
  • Oversee maintenance of equipment and resources in the kitchen.
  • Support other program staff, volunteers and community members to develop cooking skills.
  • Engage in cooking demonstrations.
  • Advocate for healthy food in our community.
 
Position Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3 years of experience with large-scale food preparation and kitchen leadership.
  • Diploma in a related field of study (culinary, nutrition, social work) an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prepare healthy, nutritious, and delicious meals for 100-150 people.
  • Experience with budgeting, sourcing food, and working with suppliers.
  • Experience working with volunteers and supervisory skills an asset.
  • Experience with program planning and evaluation.
  • Experience with community and social services sector through work or volunteer experience.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community based organization.

Linguistic Profile

  • This position is not designated under Carlington’s French Language Services Plan
  • Fluency in English is essential.
  • French/English bilingualism is preferred.
  • A third language relevant to our client population is an asset.
