Student Director Responsibilities

The Cal Poly Foundation was incorporated in March 2006 to increase private support that will play a crucial role in building and maintaining the special polytechnic, high-quality, Learn by Doing education model of Cal Poly. Individuals are elected to serve as volunteer members of the foundation’s board of directors, with the expectation that the director’s personal commitment and influence with others will serve to ensure the long-term growth and success of Cal Poly.


The Student Director serves as the voice of the student body and is a voting member of the board. The position provides a unique opportunity to interact with and learn about philanthropy from the University’s key donors and volunteers, who have achieved great success in their careers. Candidates should feel passionate about excellence in education and have a strong desire to facilitate the continual improvement of Cal Poly through philanthropy. The ideal student director will possess strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.




  1. Responsibilities of the Student Director on the Cal Poly Foundation Board
    1. Serves as a full voting member on the Board of a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is a recognized auxiliary in good standing of the CSU.
    2. Serves as liaison with Associated Students and the general Cal Poly student community, keeping students informed on the issues and bringing a student perspective to Board deliberations.
    3. Commitment to serve a two-year term
    4. Commitment of time to:
      1. Prepare for Board meetings, including reviewing Board materials and meeting with University Development staff for briefings, as needed
      2. Attend regular Board meetings which are typically held quarterly on a Saturday in the months of August, November, February, and May and all Foundation-related activities related to each quarterly meeting.
      3. Maintain communication with the student community, particularly the Student Philanthropy Council, in an effort to develop a culture of giving among students.
  2. Desirable Qualifications
    1. Ability to:
      1. Communicate effectively and articulate various points of view
      2. Serve as an effective representative of the Cal Poly Foundation, especially to the student community
      3. Quickly acquire general knowledge of the organization and its relationship to the University as an auxiliary organization of the CSU
    2. Enrolled upper division or graduate student in good standing
    3. Previous experience serving on a board or in a leadership position in a student or community service organization
    4. Familiarity with the Cal Poly campus and Cal Poly Foundation activities
    5. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to philanthropy and the various activities governed by the Cal Poly Foundation.
