Salary: $15.34/hourly

Position Summary:

Under close supervision, assists in the preparation of menus and meals. Maintains cleanliness of food preparation areas, kitchen, utensils and equipment.

The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Depending on area of assignment, incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below.):

  • Assists in the preparation of menus and cooking of meals and snacks according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Assists in preparing and adhering to weekly menu’s including documenting any substitutions to the menus.
  • Stores, labels, and dates food properly.
  • Washes and drys pots, pans, eating utensils, and other cooking equipment.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen and dining areas.
  • Serves meals as required.
  • Purchases food products as needed.
  • Assists in monthly food reports, daily meal counts, and food service reports on a timely basis.
  • Performs domestic chores, i.e. cleaning, laundry and shopping.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of how to prepare well-balanced and nutritious meals.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe food handling, storage, and disposal requirements.
  • Skill in preparing food for groups of people.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill in handling sharp knives, and other cutting utensils.
  • Ability to safely operate various cooking equipment and kitchen appliances.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and three months food-handling experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • Food Handler’s Card must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
