For more information please visit www.astrazeneca.com .   Description Location: Gaithersburg, MD We are currently seeking rising undergraduate Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, or Masters/PhD students working towards an engineering degree for a 10-12 week internship during the summer of 2023.   Objectives/Goals of the Position: Frozen drug substance offers several advantages over liquid storage such as reduced microbial growth, increased product stability, and increased operational flexibility. It is critical to establish freeze-thaw process conditions to maintain product quality. Typically, water is considered a good surrogate for characterizing freeze-thaw profiles at-scale as it is cost-effective and has a higher specific heat capacity than protein and buffer solutions. However, recent findings indicate that certain solutions may take longer to thaw than water and there may be other factors contributing to this phenomenon. The goal of this internship is to systematically evaluate factors impacting bulk thaw time of solutions and correlate this with key thermophysical properties. Findings will be used to identify a suitable surrogate solution for thawing studies performed at commercial fill/finish sites.   Primary Duties: Design and execute thawing-related experiments. Analyze data and present results.   Position Requirements   Rising undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Masters/PhD student working towards a degree in Biomedical engineering, Chemical engineering or a related engineering field.
