Location: Gaithersburg, MD

We are currently seeking a Junior, Senior and Master/PhD students for a 10-12 week internship during the summer of 2023.

 

Objectives/Goals of the Position:

  • The ultimate goal for this position is to contribute toward an improved understanding of formulation parameters on the development of spray dried solid dosage form for biological therapeutics.
  • Spray drying of proteins into dry powder imposes different stresses such as shear, thermal and adsorption at air liquid interface, all of which could compromise protein stability.
  • The inclusion of various excipients in the spray dried formulations offers protection to the protein and potentially preserves its stability post drying.
  • Therefore, the main objective of this project is to evaluate the impact of various excipients on protein stability (salts, sugars, amino acids, etc) in solution as well as their impact on spray drying performance.
  • Additional focuses include evaluating the impact of various protein biophysical properties, such as molecular weight, charge, and hydrophobicity, on overall stability during spray drying.
  • Perform all spray drying activities.
  • Prepare, screen and optimize formulations with different excipients to achieve improved protein stability (SEC, MFI, visual inspection, etc.) and desirable dried powder properties (ssFTIR, residual water content, yield).
  • Use different analytical tools to understand the solution properties of formulations and the solid properties of spray-dried powders.
  • Data collection, recording, interpretation and presentation.
  • Deliver a final poster and presentation at the end of the internship.
 
Position Requirements

 

  • Major in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering or other related discipline.
  • Prior experience working in laboratory setting.
  • Prior experience in buffer/solution preparation.  
  • Prior knowledge about protein formulations and/or protein biophysical characterization (desirable).
  • Prior knowledge/understanding of spray drying (desirable).
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0
