SUMMARY

This position serves as a key member of the People & Culture team at Woodland Park Zoo. You will lead and influence at all levels and business units within the Zoo by providing strategic and tactical solutions to support high growth people priorities and develop creative talent retention strategies to help build a high-performing, diverse and inclusive culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Manage and oversee human resource programs including but not limited to: Talent Acquisition, performance management, workforce planning, disciplinary matters, disputes & investigations.
  • Work with Chief People & Culture Officer and the Senior Director of Compensation, Benefits & Systems to develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with zoo’s strategic plans. 
  • Develop and implement HR processes related to performance management and career development. Coach and support people leaders in providing feedback, documenting performance outcomes and employee development as needed and/or necessary corrective actions.
  • Partner with hiring managers and Talent Acquisition to collaborate on the successful attraction, recruitment, and retention for new talent.
  • Partners with business leaders on workforce planning and organizational design efforts. Proactively identifies opportunities to optimize the organization – structure, size, workforce composition - in support of business outcomes
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommend best practices.  Review policies and practices to maintain compliance. 
  • Maintain department records. Always handle confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner.
  • Manage and oversee employee satisfaction, analyze data and make recommendations to zoo management for action and improvement.
  • Lead and manage as required a variety of projects and initiatives for the department. 
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required (BA/BS) in an HR related field
  • 10 plus years of progressive experience in HR, Talent Acquisition, Employee Engagement, or Organizational Development, Performance Management, Reward and Recognition, Leadership Development, and Training
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to provide strategic insight and analysis to business issues from a solution perspective, not just an HR perspective
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.  Ability to communicate information effectively across the various departments.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Ability to identify and suggest changes that promote positive impacts with a lens for diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work in an extremely fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and manage multiple projects with competing demands while maintaining a commitment to excellence. 

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Human Resources (SHRM-CP or PHR) Certification.
  • Labor Relations experience desired.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may be required to lift up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
