This is skilled automotive and equipment mechanical work approaching the journeyman level. An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of automotive and specialized mechanical equipment. The employee is responsible for diagnosing and executing repairs needed, reporting time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired, and ordering parts. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.
Repairs and services automobiles, trucks, tractors, power mowers, and other motorized equipment.
Drives trucks; makes road service calls; and tows in disabled automobiles, trucks, and tractors if unable to make road repairs.
Diagnoses and repairs engines, drive trains, electrical, steering and suspensions, braking systems and components.
Performs preventative maintenance service and inspections on a variety of city owned vehicles and equipment.
Makes minor welding repairs and may use spray paint to touch up weld repair work.
Repairs defective electrical wiring.
Operates various shop equipment including hydraulic jacks, air and electric powered tools, bench grinders and brake lathes.
May operate welding equipment including acetylene torches, arc welders and MIG welding machines.
Does all other mechanical work in accordance with quality standards and practices of the trade for gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
