JOB DESCRIPTION

EARLY EDUCATION COACH

OVERVIEW: The Early Education Coach is responsible for observing and providing feedback to the teaching staff for Head Start and Early Head Start and to maintain compliance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS). The Early Education Coach will implement the coaching plan and utilize a variety of formats to efficiently coach the teaching staff. The Coach will also develop a plan to assess the teaching staff's strengths and weaknesses and make intensive coaching available to those that require the support. The Coach will also make teaching staff aware of applicable professional development opportunities and verify that professional development plans are being fulfilled. The Coach must work closely with the teaching staff therefore, must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral and have knowledge of working with, and teaching adults.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Education Manager

SUPERVISES: No Supervisory Responsibilities

POSITION STATUS: Regular Part-time, works 20 hours per week; 40 weeks per year

SALARY LEVEL: $20 per hour

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday 8 to 2:30, Tuesday thru Friday 9 to 12:30

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Coaching:

  • Implement current coaching plan and update and develop coaching plan annually.
  • Utilize a variety of formats for delivery of effective coaching strategies to assess all education staff to identify strengths, areas of needed improvement and which staff would benefit most from intensive coaching.
  • Work with teachers in assessing problem areas and aid teachers in setting short- and long- term goals, update as necessary.
  • Develops written, individualized plans that identify clearly articulated goals for staff receiving coaching services and processes for achieving these goals
  • Provide opportunities for intensive coaching and ensure intensive coaching opportunities align with the program's school readiness goals, curricula, and other professional development strategies.
  • Provide feedback to all teachers for the purpose of instructional support. Feedback may relate to, but not be limited to: classroom environment, materials, daily structure and routines, positive guidance, classroom management, dealing with challenging behavior, individualized and outcome-focused interaction strategies to support children's development.
  • Assist and support staff in implementing transition activities including classroom transitions and preschool transitions.
  • Perform assessments utilizing tools including, but not limited to, CLASS and Coaching to Fidelity by Teaching Strategies.
  • Model developmentally appropriate practices and serve as a resource for participants on child development and professional development.
  • Monitor teachers in classrooms to identify growth areas as well as provide guidance, both formally and informally.
  • Assist Education manager in ensuring curriculum fidelity through a variety of strategies

Training:

  • In collaboration with the Education and Disabilities Manager develop, conduct, or arrange trainings as needed, including professional development days, ongoing training, center or team specific training, and additional related training for parents, volunteers, or others.
  • Identify opportunities for the education staff that are not identified for intensive coaching to receive other forms of research-based professional development and assistance aligned with the program's goals.
  • Develop team building strategies using the latest research methods.

Other:

  • Develop, compile and analyze assessment data and progress measures to drive coaching strategies and practice.
  • Record and submit written monthly reports, data collection, reports or other administrative forms in a timely manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Ability to guide and facilitate learning techniques for the Head Start Child Development Staff.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Extensive knowledge of early childhood education and child development
  • Ability to be sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Experience teaching adults and how to aid in supporting adult growth.
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability for program continually.
  • Working knowledge of local community resources.
  • Ability to translate theory and professional training into practical solutions.
  • Ability to provide for a trans-disciplinary approach to presenting information and conducting interventions.
  • Knowledge of Head Start program
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree in Early Childhood Education and five (5) years teaching experience
  • CLASS reliable and maintain annual certification
  • Experience with Practice Based Coaching or Similar
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills required.
  • Must have two (2) years of experience working in a supervisory position.
  • Knowledge and experience working with children with disabilities.
  • Experience with low income and culturally diverse families.
  • Demonstrated teaching and training skills.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license, must be insurable
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test by employment date
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies.
  • Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry a child 20+ pounds
  • Other Functional requirements:
  1. Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  2. Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to children’s needs (will include walking 4 hours; standing 4 hours; crawling 1 hour; kneeling 2 hours; stooping and bending 2 hours as needed in job duties).
  3. Must also be able to work at a desk 8 hours per day
  4. The work is performed both in an office environment, which involves hearing voice conversations, keyboarding, sitting, standing and walking, and in a classroom environment which involves high levels of noise and regular interaction with staff, children, and families.

OTHER DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains good attendance.
  • Performs all duties assigned in a timely and professional manner.
  • Must have or be willing to get CPR/First Aid within 30 days of employment
  • Must have or be willing to get Food Handler’s Card within 30 days of employment
  • Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Check prior to employment
  • Pre-Employment drug testing to be administered prior to employment
