The Process Engineer will work in close partnership with engineers and technologists from other disciplines and the GLE staff. Additional responsibilities include development and execution of process models, participation in integrated safety and process hazards analyses, technical oversight of vendors and subcontractors, technical presentations, procedure development, and support of system and component sourcing.

NOTE: This role is subject to the incumbent's ability to hold and maintain an NRC Q-clearance, as well as their ongoing ability to maintain nuclear site access.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop process design requirements, calculations, analysis, and associated documentation for pilot/prototype- and production-scale uranium enrichment separation, gas handling, and storage systems including development of process flow diagrams, equipment and instrumentation specifications, process narratives, control system and interlock narratives, heat and material balances, and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Built and model process simulations using platforms such as ChemCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and Microsoft Excel
  • Perform calculations and analyses for various related chemical processes

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in the design, sizing, specification, and operation of typical chemical process components including piping, valves, pressure relief devices, compressors, pumps, storage, and instrumentation
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in chemical process flow dynamics and simulation, both above and below atmospheric pressure
  • Proficient at Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work extended hours on occasion and travel as required (~10%)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering or related scientific discipline
  • Understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle industry and technology, especially uranium enrichment and the processing, handling, and storage of UF6
  • Experience in the safe handling of UF6 including mechanical pumping, cold trapping and other methods of mass transfer
  • Experience and familiarity with US Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing and regulations, integrated safety analyses (ISA), and process hazards analyses (PHA)
  • Experience in the preparation, measurement, and control of UF6-containing gas mixtures
  • Experience in the optimization of enrichment cascades
