The Museum features 84 acres of exhibits, experiences, and outdoor exploration, including one of the East Coast's largest butterfly conservatories and a two-story science center. As an accredited zoo, the Museum is home to lemurs, black bears, endangered red wolves, and more than 140 species of live animals, butterflies, and insects. The Museum partners with NASA, NOAA, the National Science Foundation, Duke University, NC State University, and the University of North Carolina on many research projects and programs.

Description

Position Objective:  To support the mission of the Museum by assisting in the organization and delivery of fundraising events during the year.

Responsibilities

  • Implement aspects of event planning (including, but not limited to) keep updated inventory of materials and order additional supplies as needed, collaborate with innovation and learning team to plan science-based activities, work with graphics team to determine digital and on-site signage needs.
  • Assist with setup/breakdown and provide support at events.  
  • Collect off-site donations and purchases and submit payment requests to accounting team.
  • Deliver important event details to Museum staff prior to event on-sale dates.
  • Distribute and collect donation recognition forms, certificate of insurance information forms, and other important legal documents.
  • Update constituent records in Altru database.
  • Research and manage vendor relationships, including overseeing on-site vendor deliveries.
  • Engage with volunteers and guests of all ages at events.
  • Initiative, attention to detail and ability to meet timelines are a must.
  • Assist with other events as requested.
  • Become knowledgeable in Museum operations, including but not limited to building opening/closing procedures, safety protocols and guest relations expectations.
  • Participate in cross-functional committees, including Emergency Coordinator team.
  • Pull rosters from ticketing systems and deliver to staff for events.
  • Model responsible behaviors to team.
  • Using the Museum’s values as a guide, foster positive culture on the team, motivating through positive reinforcement
  • Prioritize and handle multiple tasks, delegating when appropriate.
  • Develop and train others.
  • Effectively communicate operational successes, opportunities, and concerns to management.
  • Work independently with limited coaching and oversight.
  • Always demonstrate adherence to Museum safety procedures.
  • Engage with Museum visitors in a positive and helpful way to support an enjoyable and safe guest experience.
  • Prioritize the Museum’s values of inclusion and kindness in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Additional duties and special projects as needed.

Actual Pay Rate: $18.50/ hour

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to work as member of a team and with diverse populations
  • Excellent computer, organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must be available to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends, and Holidays. Schedule will shift based on events
  • 2+ years in a customer service position
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Work is divided between an office environment, the museum and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Candidates should be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Candidates should be able to walk distances of up to one mile over varying terrains, be on their feet for up to 8 hours at a time and lift up to 30 lbs
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Valid driver’s license and positive driving record

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Able and willing to embrace Museum mission of science as a way of knowing
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization
  • Experience leading volunteers
  • Familiar with Microsoft Sharepoint
  • Experience with Altru data management system
  • Experience working in database systems
  • Spanish speaking
  • One or more years event experience

Pay Range 18.50/ hour
