Ships Plans Associate 

Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Provide intellectual, physical and electronic access to the Ships Plans Collection of Mystic Seaport Museum. Emphasis for access is research and sales of plan copies while maintaining proper stewardship of the collection.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organize the plans collection through physical inventories
  • Create online finding aids for each collection
  • Participate in the preservation and accessibility of the ships plans collection
  • Respond to reference requests related to the ships plans collection
  • Help on-site researchers find the most useful plans for their purposes
  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality copies to customers while minimizing wear and tear on the collection
  • Improve and increase public Web resources related to the collections
  • Supervise volunteers
 
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience working with archival collections
  • Strong foundation and belief in providing superior customer service
  • Ability to work with and continuously learn common computer applications
  • Current knowledge of Library standards and practices including MARC, EAD, etc.
  • Ability to work with Mimsy XG and EOS cataloging applications
  • Ability to participate and thrive in a team setting
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds

The Museum's grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and include a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
