Description

** PHARMACY TECHNICIAN TRAINEE **

POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides services at the TCRHCC main campus. Pharmacy services are provided to ambulatory patients, group home patients, dialysis patients and hospitalized patients. This position involves the review, preparation, document-checking, labeling, dispensing and quality assurance of medications provided by the Pharmacy. Responsibilities include maintaining a sanitary work environment and patient area, managing and restocking pharmaceutical inventory, and ordering of supplies. This position requires working rotational shifts: day, evening, nights, weekends, and Holidays. The position also provides the opportunity for career advancement through promotion as determined by obtaining Pharmacy Technician Licensure and gaining experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Permissible activities of a pharmacy technician trainee. Acting in compliance with all applicable statutes, rules and under the supervision of a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician trainee may assist a graduate intern, pharmacy intern, or pharmacist with the following when applicable to the pharmacy practice site:
  2. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and performs a variety of complicated tasks, which are outlined below.
  3. Routinely inspects assigned drug storage areas monthly to insure proper storage, security and prepares proper documentation.
  4. Coordinates efforts with nurses and other health professionals to ensure adequate supply levels are always available on the units/wards.
  5. Participates in scheduled and organized continuing education programs as conducted by the Pharmacist, Nursing or Medical Staff. Must demonstrate leadership in the work environment, promote harmony and customer service.
  6. Initiate or accept verbal or electronic refill authorization from a medical practitioner or medical practitioner's agent and record, on the original prescription order or by an alternative method approved by the Board or its designee, the medical practitioner's name, patient name, name and quantity of prescription medication, specific refill information, and name of medical practitioner's agent, if any;
  7. Record information in the refill record or patient profile: Reviews basic chart screening procedures, which include allergies, and weight/age-based dosing information during prescription data entry into Pharmacy Program. Must keep records of patient doses and drug mixtures, usually through an electronic filing system, for health and billing purposes.
  8. Type and affix a label for a prescription medication or enter information for a new or refill prescription medication into a computer, if a pharmacist verifies the accuracy and initials in handwriting or by another method approved by the Board or its designee the finished label prepared by the technician before the prescription medication is dispensed to the patient.
  9. Reconstitute a prescription medication, if a pharmacist checks the ingredients and procedure before reconstitution and verifies the final product after reconstitution.
  10. Retrieve, count, or pour a prescription medication, if a pharmacist verifies the contents of the prescription medication against the original prescription medication container or by an alternative drug identification method approved by the Board or its designee.
  11. Prepackage drugs in accordance with rules and regulation set by the board of pharmacy.
  12. Measure, count, pour, or otherwise prepare and package a drug needed for hospital inpatient dispensing, if a pharmacist verifies the accuracy, measuring, counting, pouring, preparing, packaging, and safety of the drug before the drug is delivered to a patient care area.
  13. Perform as an active member of the pharmacy department team.
  14. Communicate effectively and collaborate within the department and TCRHCC.
  15. Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  16. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  17. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
  18. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisory pharmacist. 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

Must be able to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms for prolonged periods. Must be able to be able to stoop, bending, kneel, crouch, or crawl as well as push and pull intermittently. Must be able to carry drugs, moderate lifting of totes of drugs, charts, and boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able hear alarms, client calls, and instructions from physician/department staff. Must have the ability of close, distant, peripheral vision with the ability to adjust focus as needed. Must have ability of Depth Perception. Must be able to do prolonged repetitive motion actions regarding both hands, grasping of both hands in a slight/light manner, and, fine dexterity utilizing both hands. Must be able to use both hands for firm/heavy grasping in both hands intermittently.

Mental:

Immediate response to telephone requests, verbal requests. Mental attention and assertiveness are required at all times. The ability and willingness to learn new information is an expectation.

 

** CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN **

This position involves the review, preparation, document-checking, labeling, dispensing and quality assurance of medications provided by the Pharmacy. Responsibilities include maintaining a sanitary work environment and patient area, managing and restocking pharmaceutical inventory, and ordering of supplies. This position requires working rotational shifts: day, evening, nights, weekends, and Holidays. The position also provides the opportunity for career advancement through tier levels as determined by pharmacy experience and certification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

APPLIES TO PHARMACY TECHNICIAN I/II/III:

  1. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and performs a variety of complicated tasks under supervision of a Pharmacist, which are outlined below.
  2. Reviews basic chart screening procedures, which include allergies, and weight/age-based dosing information during prescription data entry into Pharmacy Program.
  3. Receives, types, labels, and fills medication orders and prescriptions appropriately followed by a final check by the Pharmacist.
  4. Maintains all prescription and order records, usually through an electronic filing system, for health and billing purposes.
  5. Works with pharmacy billers and other pharmacy staff to complete billing of prescription claims to the extent possible and appropriate.
  6. Provide consistent accurate information to patients and other customers, in person and by phone.
  7. Accurately dispenses prescriptions to patients, verifying patient identity and offering counseling from a Pharmacist.
  8. Works efficiently with pharmacy electronic and automated systems, including Pyxis, Parata, Accuvax, Propharm, Allscripts, etc.
  9. Works closely with other pharmacy staff, health care providers, and patients to avoid and resolve discrepancies, complications, and medication errors.
  10. Draws up single doses of injectable medications or vaccines as required under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
  11. Routinely inspects assigned drug storage areas to ensure proper storage, security and prepares proper documentation.
  12. Participates in scheduled and organized continuing education programs as conducted by the Pharmacist, Nursing or Medical Staff.
  13. Receives and fills orders from the inpatient units, field clinics, etc. with appropriate drugs followed by a final check by the Pharmacist.
  14. Performs intravenous admixture procedures. Assures the calculation and preparation of hyper-alimentation (Total Parenteral Nutrition) products, anticoagulant, cardio-active, chemotherapy products and other admixtures are properly prepared as required. Prepares labels for all IV’s, assure sterile technique and record productivity.
  15. Coordinates efforts with nurses and other health professionals to ensure adequate supply levels are always available on the units/wards.
  16. Must demonstrate leadership in the work environment, promote harmony and customer service.
  17. Ensure proper PPE is always used while on duty. Face surgical mask is to be work in all hospital areas. Proper handwashing is required. If water is not available use hand sanitizer. Social distancing will be practiced by department.
  18. Proper PPE is used inside assigned Clinics or Units. NIOSH- approved N95 Masks filtering face piece respirator or higher, if available, this includes eye or face shields, gloves, and isolation gowns.
  19. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. Complete provided training.
  20. Completes all electronic health record entries accurately and timely pertinent to patient care role.
  21. Participates in departmental workflow and or testing teams as related to electronic health record or other project initiatives.
  22. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Work involves prolonged periods of standing, sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, walking, twisting, maintaining balance and reaching, frequent kneeling crouching, and occasional driving and climbing. Must have ability to carry drugs, moderate lifting of totes of drugs, charts, and boxes weighing up to 24 pounds daily and occasionally over 100lbs when necessary. Must have ability of simple grasping, firm grasping, fine manipulation of both hands and ability to use the keyboard for a prolonged amount of time. Sensory requirements include far vision, near vision, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages and telephone use.

Mental:

Immediate response to telephone requests, verbal requests. Mental attention and assertiveness are required at all times. The ability and willingness to learn new information is an expectation. Must be able to continuously cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, manage altercations, concentrate, handle high degree of flexibility, handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, work alone, demonstrate high degree of patient, adapt to shift work, and work in areas that are close and crowded. Must able to accept a flexible schedule to meet unit needs.

Environmental:

May continually be exposed to infectious diseases, chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, loud noises and occasional unprotected heights.

 
Position Requirements

** PHARMACY TECHNICIAN TRAINEE **

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D

Certification:

Current valid pharmacy Technician Trainee License through the Board of Pharmacy, upon joining TCRHCC the candidate must within six months of hire Obtain Pharmacy Technician Licensure in good standing through the State Board of Pharmacy. Failure to obtain licensure within six months will result in termination of employment at TCRHCC.

After obtaining licensure technicians are required to keep (CPhT) in good standing and maintain continuing education credits as required by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, the Board of Pharmacy, and any other regulatory agencies.

Experience:

Must demonstrate skills in the practical use of electronic systems and database management software and intra-venous preparation skills, and satisfactory sterile technique(s).

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints and no prior records of substance abuse
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences
  • Electronic Medication cabinet experience
  • Articulation skills (writing and verbal)
  • Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Successful completion of fingerprint clearance requirements, physical examinations, and other screenings indicating that the applicant is qualified to be employed by TCRHCC and demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Submission of all required employment-related documents, applications, resumes, references, and other required information free of false, misleading or incomplete information, as determined by TCRHCC.

 

** CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN **

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education (I/II/III):

High School diploma or GED

Certification:

Certified Pharmacy Technician I:

  • Must have and maintain a current Pharmacy Technician Licensure in any state or territory of the United States.
  • Must have and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association, if none must obtain within ninety (90) days of hire.

Certified Pharmacy Technician II:

  • Must have and maintain an Immunization administration certificate.

Certified Pharmacy Technician III:

  • Must have and maintain Certified Compounding Sterile Preparation Technician (CPST).

Experience:

Certified Pharmacy Technician I:

  • Must have three (3) months experience in the practical use of electronic systems and database management software and intra-venous preparation skills, and satisfactory sterile technique(s).

Certified Pharmacy Technician II:

  • Must have more than two (2) years of healthcare experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician; including demonstrated knowledge of medications and medical terminology, inventory control, and pharmacy informational systems.

Certified Pharmacy Technician III:

  • Must have more than four (4) years of healthcare experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician; in an inpatient and outpatient setting, and actively apply to practice the skills gained with the certifications under Certification III above.

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints and no prior records of substance abuse
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences
  • Electronic Medication cabinet experience
