This is a senior museum position responsible for oversight over the day-to-day accounting operations, the monthly close process, financial statement preparation, internal controls, and audits. In addition to oversight of the Museum's general accounting functions, the Controller will be oversee the business activities of the Museum's shipyard. The Controller will supervise an Accounting Team of three.

Essential Functions:

  • Financial reporting in compliance with GAAP
  • Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive set of internal controls through budgets and policies and procedures
  • Responsible for preparation for annual audit. Liaison with external auditors throughout the year
  • Review and analyze operating performance to ensure continuous business improvement
  • Provide financial analysis on operating performance
  • Assist in preparation of annual operating and capital budgets, including financial modeling
  • Liaison with external endowment manager on cash management issues
  • Manage staff as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Shipyard Functions:

  • Review Shipyard business processes and implement best practices
  • Establish and maintain internal controls
  • Provide input for the development of estimates, progress reporting, and cost control management for ship repair contracts and Museum fleet maintenance and repairs
  • Prepare and issue all shipyard invoices
  • Implement timekeeping and job cost systems
  • Maintain and analyze shipyard job cost variance reports
  • Attend periodic progress meetings for repair and maintenance projects
  • Communicate and coordinate with shipyard, project management, and purchasing staff
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting
  • Minimum of 5 years accounting management experience
  • Not-for-profit and cost accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A track record of accomplishment in a complex organization
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, attention to detail, strong work ethic and the ability to learn quickly are musts
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a positive team environment

Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
