JOB SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, this part time position will assist in the implementation of the Strong Fast Fit Program, a culturally specific program that nurtures life-long healthy behaviors to prevent the onset of obesity and risk for type II diabetes, as well help youth prepare for responsible decision making about their sexual health. This position will in facilitate age appropriate nutrition education and fitness activities for youth, parents and families; facilitate sexual health curriculum for youth; complete individual family check-ins and assessments; provide monthly/quarterly family activities; submit monthly reports; and encourage youth and families to achieve their goals. Fitness activities include, but are not limited to weight training, running, swimming, cycling, low to high impact aerobics, circuit training and various other team sports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develop and Facilitate Curricula
Facilitate co-ed or gender specific groups for a school and after school program
Conduct and plan educational nutrition and fitness classes for Latino Youth ages 7-17.
Assess participant’s motor skill level to help determine exercise intensity
Incorporate comprehensive sexuality educational curriculum
Facilitate all class material and techniques
Build and maintain relationship
Develop, maintain and build positive, professional effective working relationship with youth, families, staff and other youth serving agencies
Administration
Conduct intakes with participants ages 7-17.
Record and maintain participant and family information /outcomes monthly and quarterly
Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings sessions
Submit monthly reports and other data documentation
RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to the Program Coordinator who reports to the Girls and Youth Program Director. The incumbent will interact with youth, parents/guardians, Minneapolis Public School Representatives, and community agencies. Critical relationships will include Coordinators, participants, and parents/guardians.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Minimum one year of experience working with youth from low-income, inner-city families.
Two years college or continuing education, or equivalent, with special interest/aptitude and enjoyment of nutrition and fitness.
Must have one-year minimum experience with planning and facilitating structured groups with diverse populations of youth and low-income youth.
Strong knowledge of and experience working with Latino Community
Ability to write and speak fluent Spanish and English
Knowledge of fitness and nutrition.
Knowledge of youth development.
Ability to work with a variety of cultures, perspective and backgrounds
Ability to build strong relationships with youth ages 11-18 and their parents/guardians.
Ability to carry out duties independently and within a team setting to meet desired goals
Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills.
Ability to work with a variety of people and styles and must be able to focus on the customer—the youth served and their families.
Strong problem solving skills required and must be able to make quick decisions while using good judgment.
Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills.
Must be CPR and First Aide certified.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in youth development, health and fitness or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Ability to perform and actively participate in 60-minute exercise sessions in various formats including, but not limited to, weight training, running, swimming, cycling, low-impact and high impact aerobics, circuit training, and various team sports.
Ability to work outside when weather permits.
