JOB SUMMARY:

This position ensures the smooth operation of the Aquatics facility by performing front-line duties and providing administrative support to the Aquatics Coordinator. This position also contributes to top quality programming and operations within the Aquatics Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Oversee swimming lessons and aquatic center during assigned shift/block: [on-deck supervision]

  • Arrange, prepare and conduct classes according to the approved YWCA/Red Cross program standards.
  • Be active and present on pool deck during lesson times to provide ongoing feedback to instructor staff on ways to improve teaching technique, relay timely information to customers and build customer relationships.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from staff, patrons, parents and swim lesson participants.
  • Ensure that instructors teach in accordance with program standards.
  • Provide guidance to the swim instructors/aides regarding their role in classes.
  • Ensures that all possible safety measures are observed, including taking care of proper equipment, conducting regular inspections, and training staff in safe spaces and group management of participants.
  • Troubleshoot any problem situations - make on-deck decisions involving staff and members as situations arise.
  • Work at any YWCA site as assigned by supervisor.

Administrative support:

  • Process lesson registrations, assign instructors to lesson timeslots, working professionally with instructors and parents as needed to accommodate requests within reason.
  • Prepare master deck roster, posted class roster, and instructor level checklist.
  • Check systems and messages - follow up as necessary in a timely manner.
  • Update and maintain report logs, databases.
  • Assist with the operations of Group Swim Lessons and Private Swim Lessons (i.e. level placement, returning phone calls, teacher placement, customer service, lesson registration, etc.)
  • Assist with the processing of rental requests (i.e. returning phone calls, updating the schedule, etc.)
  • Assist with the creation and posting of pool schedules
  • Perform inventory control of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform weekly administrative tasks and/or projects as assigned by supervisor.

Active in direct service within front line programs.

  • Actively on deck to run programs during group lessons to ensure quality of programs.
  • Actively on deck during shift to ensure quality operation of aquatic center.
  • Perform front-line positions functions as assigned and/or when short staffed.
  • Enforce all policies, procedures, and brand standard throughout aquatic center to ensure consistency.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with department policies, procedures, work and safety rules and the employee manual.
  • Contact a coordinator and/or facility engineer at home when appropriate safety or operational issues arise.
  • Implement emergency procedures when appropriate.
  • Respond to concerns and/or complaints from patrons in a professional manner. Refer problematic situations to the Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Responds quickly and effectively to all rescue or emergency situations. Performs first aid techniques and rescue procedures as necessary.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Aquatics Coordinator, who reports to the General Manager. The incumbent will interact with Lifeguards, Head Guards, Water Safety Instructors/aides, Water Fitness Instructors, Swim Coaches, YWCA patrons, participants and their parents, and possibly staff members from Girls and Youth or ECE.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  • Current Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Ability to perform water skills on demand.
  • At least 18 years of age– able to work independently (lifeguard) without supervision
  • Ability to travel to any YWCA site.

 

Preferred:

  • High school diploma/General Education Degree preferred.
  • Three years experience as a lifeguard.
  • Two years experience in Water Safety Instruction.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift/support students as needed.
  • Required to be in the pool for extended periods of time.
  • Indoor pool - can be warm, humid and noisy.
  • Any additional demands required when performing the duties of front–line positions.
