Starting Pay: $18.2601 Hourly ($37,981)
After 1st Year: $19.9542 Hourly ($41,505)
After 2nd Year: $22.7346 Hourly ($47,288)
After 3rd Year: $23.7220 Hourly ($49,342)
After 4th Year: $24.6085 Hourly ($51,186)
After 5th Year: $25.1797 Hourly ($52,374)
After 6th Year: $25.9931 Hourly ($54,066)
After 7th Year: $26.9886 Hourly ($56,136)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years of experience working in a machine shop.
-OR-
Two (2) years of experience in repair and inspection of steam locomotives and related equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Michigan drivers license.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and irregular hours.
  • Must be willing to wear a prescribed work uniform.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs skilled work including the maintenance and operation of steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, rolling stock and other related railroad equipment and machine shop equipment. Works under the supervision of the Railroad Operations manager and/or the Railroad Right-of-Way Supervisor.

STATEMENT OF TASKS:

  • Performs daily, weekly and monthly inspections of all operating equipment, including locomotives (steam and diesel), rolling stock, right of way and stationary boilers and engines;
  • Follows traditional practices to maintain steam and diesel locomotives and railroad passenger cars;
  • Maintain right of way which includes installation of new rail, gauging, lining, surfacing tract structure, switches, signals, crossings, all necessary safety track-related devices and track maintenance;
  • Inspects and ensures all equipment is in safe operating condition, meets operational safety standards and complies with all governmental regulations;
  • Maintains operating equipment and performs related duties utilizing lathes, mills, saws, drill presses, welding and fabricating.
  • Prepares and maintains all necessary reports and records as required by local, state and federal agencies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of coal, wood and oil-fired steam locomotives and diesel locomotives;
  • Knowledge of stationary and portable boilers;
  • Knowledge of railroad track and structures;
  • Skill in gas and electrical welding and cutting operations;
  • Ability to inspect, maintain, repair and operate steam and diesel locomotives;
  • Ability to inspect, maintain and repair stationary and portable boilers;
  • Ability to operate and repair lathes, milling machines, shapers, drill presses and other machine shop equipment;
  • Ability to analyze and determine by inspection the safety of railroad operations;
  • Ability to maintain railroad right-of-ways.
  • Ability to make important and safe decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to attend work regularly and work under stressful conditions.
