The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Photography Manager will be an essential part of the Marketing, Communications, and Sales team. This position will service the entire Museum and liaise closely with parallel departments at the Academy. You will also build and sustain effective strategies, processes, and solutions for museum documentation and storage. The ideal candidate is a highly organized self-starter, has a demonstrated track record of building systems, is an accomplished photographer, possesses a strong knowledge of photo and video equipment, and holds expert knowledge of photography software and digital asset management systems.

You Will:

  • Build and refine policies on digital asset workflow, upkeep, and backup.
  • Facilitate and document photo requests from press and multiple Museum departments (e.g., Film Programs, Education and Public Engagement, Advancement, Membership, Community Relations, Conservation, Marketing, and Communications).
  • Coordinate photography assignments including organization and management and executing contracts with outside vendors; will occasionally have to photograph for assignments.
  • Edit, caption, and post photos to the Academy Museum press website.
  • Maintain institutional library of reference images and derivative archives.
  • Represent the Communications team in institutional conversations about developing and sustaining a museum-specific digital asset management system.
  • Attend Academy Museum events, assist in creation of face sheets for key attendees, identify subjects, and organize group shots.
  • Acquire familiarity with museum trustees, film artists, and other museum/Academy VIPs.
  • General knowledge of cultural icons and celebrities.
  • Analyze and prepare yearly budget information and describe capital expenditure requests for the communications photo department.
  • Assist Academy for institutional priority events, including the Academy Awards and Governors Awards.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a photographer (editorial, still life, exhibition, advertising, and/or reportage).
  • Proficiency in both Macintosh and Windows platforms.
  • Experience with digital asset management including understanding of preservation and backup standards and protocols.
  • Expert knowledge of Photoshop (including processing RAW files).
  • Expert knowledge in imaging, color correction and color space.
  • Expert knowledge of photo retouching and digital restoration of photos.
  • Expert knowledge of preparing for and printing digital assets.
  • Expert knowledge of preparing for and scanning non-digital assets.
  • Familiarity with both inkjet and dye-sub printers.
  • Familiarity with photo scanning.
  • Knowledge of image browsing and cataloging software (Photo Mechanic and Adobe Bridge).
  • Knowledge of DSLR and mirrorless cameras and equipment.
  • Knowledge of studio lighting and equipment.
  • Understanding of IPTC and EXIF metadata.
  • Above average facility with other software including Microsoft Office and Apple iWork; DNG conversion tool; ChronoSync or other automated backup software; color calibration software; Abode Illustrator; Adobe InDesign; Adobe Acrobat Pro; ftp software.
  • Familiarity with online research to identify subjects.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed, sometimes on short notice.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

The expected base salary range for this role is $65,000 to $70,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
