Job Description

TEACHER/BUS AIDE

OVERVIEW: The Teacher/Bus Aide will accompany the Bus Driver on a school bus and interact with children, during routine pickup and delivery of 3, 4 and 5 year old children. Teacher/Bus Aide will assist in creating and managing an attractive, warm, and challenging, learning environment for young children, by incorporating developmentally appropriate learning activities, which meet the needs of the group, as well as individual children.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Teacher Aide/Bus Aide

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Children 3, 4 and 5 years old

POSITION STATUS: Regular Full-Time

SALARY LEVEL: $16.00

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 40 hrs. per week during the school year.

Hours may vary depending on need.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Treat all children with dignity and respect.
  • Ensure children are aware of bus rules before boarding.
  • Ensure order and safety of children as they board and leave the bus. Do not unfasten seat belts until bus is at a complete stop
  • Release children one row at a time.
  • Assign seats and assure that each child is in his assigned seat.
  • Maintain order and discipline on the bus at all times, in a positive and gentle manner. Redirect inappropriate behavior in a non-punitive manner.
  • Keep an accurate count of children boarding and leaving bus.
  • Keep children engaged in songs or games during the ride.
  • Ensure passenger safety at all times (seat belts fastened, windows closed, children are never left unattended)
  • Maintain up-to-date emergency cards in van or bus with list of children's name, address, and emergency contacts.
  • Assist the education staff in the classroom activities and playground activities. Direct learning activities for children.
  • Assist support staff in areas specifically identified.
  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a safe, healthy and attractive environment.
  • Work closely with education staff in sharing concerns and implementing plans to meet identified needs.
  • Assists in implementing the program curriculum and the Head Start Performance Standards in all classrooms. Provides, in advance, input into the daily preparation of developmentally appropriate lesson plans. Including: individualized activities that are recorded in the lesson plans; both classroom and playground activities; multicultural educational materials and activities; and family style dining at meals, per HSPS and program policy and procedure.
  • Assists in organizing the classroom in well-developed and defined learning centers. Rotates materials routinely, to create a stimulating learning environment for young children. Assists in maintaining a classroom that is clean, safe, and free of clutter. Learning materials shall be labeled and organized, to make them easily accessible for children. Assists in preparing attractive and eye-catching displays for the room, changing and maintaining them regularly. Display children's artwork, at their level, making it the focus of displays.
  • Assists with preparing the room, prior to the children's arrival, by cleaning and preparing the classroom for the next day. Assists with recruiting classroom volunteers and planning activities for them to do in the classroom.
  • Facilitates children's learning, using appropriate child guidance techniques. Stays involved with the children at all times in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Assists in observing children and recording observations, making appropriate referrals to the Teacher. Assists in maintaining daily observations.
  • Assists with developmental screening, as assigned, ensuring proper administration of the screening and accurate results. Assists in maintaining and effectively using up-to-date individual and group checklists.
  • Involves parents in all aspects of the classroom. Greets and talks with parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a positive home-center connection and a family partnership. Work with the Teacher to maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents through a variety of methods (phone calls, notes, informal conferences) and assists in preparing activities to send home for parents to do with their children. Encourages parents to become involved in workshops, training and other Head Start activities.

Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year experience working with young children
  • First Aid and Infant Child CPR card within one month of employment.
  • A physical exam with results in letter format that states applicant is free of communicable diseases, including results of a negative TB, test prior to employment.
  • Must be up-to-date on COVID 19 and submit vaccinations and provide vaccination documents upon hire.
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or felonies.
  • Pass Criminal History Background check.
  • Attend in-service training with staff on child development.
  • Must pass a UA testing prior to employment.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Ability to help supervise, guide and facilitate learning of 3, 4 and 5 year old children.
  • Ability to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others.
  • Ability to relate well with children.
  • Ability to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the school’s educational philosophy.
  • Ability to participate as a team player.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to maintain CONFIDENTIALITY.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to comply with the LOWER ELWHA KLALLAM TRIBE Drug Free Workplace policies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle or operate objects, and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Lifting 20 pounds or more.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring.
