JOB DESCRIPTION

HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START COOK

OVERVIEW: The Head Start/Early Head Start Cook provides an integral component of the program by providing nutritious and attractive meals to the students and families. Adherence to the Head Start Performance Standards and the Child/Adult Care Food Program Meal Pattern is the key to providing quality services.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Health Manager

POSITION STATUS: Regular Full Time

SALARY LEVEL: Hourly Wage $17.00 to $18.71

WORK SCHEDULE: Mondays through Fridays; works 40 hours per week; 48 weeks per year

Work schedule excludes non-food service days during the school year as planned in the program calendar.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Plan menu in cooperation with parents/guardians and nutritionist and post menu in each classroom dining area, kitchen, and staff bulletin board. Adjust menu to meet special dietary needs of enrolled children.
  • Purchase and maintain proper receiving of foods to assure quality and cost control for Head Start/Early Head Start Program. Purchase supplies that are applicable to food preparation.
  • Prepare CACFP qualified meals including credible food for all required components. Meals will include breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack for the Children's House of Learning.
  • Keep proper records of purchases, receipts, invoices, purchase orders, and actual menus served as required by the CACFP contract.
  • Monitor all food temperatures for safety and record temperatures of hot foods. Limit time that foods are held at room temperature prior to serving.
  • Check temperatures of refrigerators and freezers daily and document.
  • Maintain standards of sanitation in the kitchen by daily cleaning and disinfecting and following safe food handling practices.
    • Sanitizing solution will be made and used for food preparation surfaces and be replaced every three hours or when soiled.
    • Gloves will be used for food contact.
    • Cupboards and counter top should remain free of food and other items at the end of the day.
    • Dishes, appliances, carts, and utensils will be cleaned/sanitized and stored properly by the end of the work day.
    • N95 Masks and gloves are required for all staff not up to date on COVID Vaccinations/Boosters or Hep A.
  • Maintain proper storage and control of waste; remove garbage, clean storage area as scheduled, defrost and clean refrigerator and freezer as scheduled.
  • Work with education staff to plan and participate in food related learning activities in the classroom. Activities will be planned to promote the selection and enjoyment of a wide variety of nutritious food, which broaden the child's food experience.
  • Participate and assist in planning for parent nutrition and consumer education.
  • Participate in professional development trainings pertinent to position. Meet training requirements of Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Stay current on all CACFP standards.
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to use time wisely, prioritize tasks, and handle unplanned situations.
  • Must be able to order CACFP credible foods as needed online and at the store.
  • Must be able to prepare quality meals for large groups and meet nutritional needs.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records on menus, budget and inventory.
  • Must be free to travel, available and willing to participate in staff training, meetings and workshops.
  • Personal cleanliness/neatness and health is a must.
  • Physical capability to perform job functions.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others, and to relate well with children, staff and parents as well as visitors to the center.
  • Must maintain strict CONFIDENTIALITY
  • Must pass UA Testing prior to employment
  • Must be fully boosted and vaccinated for COVID 19 and submit vaccination records upon hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/CPR required. Food Handler’s Permit.
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases including Negative TB test by employment date
  • Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Knowledge of early childhood education or development
  • Knowledge of USDA CACFP
  • Ability to be sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written is necessary
  • Ability to provide leadership and stability for program continually.
  • Working knowledge of local community resources.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Other Functional requirements:
  1. Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  2. Have very good hearing; both eyes, hands, legs required
  3. Reaching above shoulders; use of hands and fingers;
  4. Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and stretching to perform job duties in the kitchen.

OTHER DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains good attendance.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring.
