Description

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a non-profit institution dedicated to the conservation and research of the Sonoran Desert Region with the goal of making the Sonoran Desert accessible, understandable, and valued. We are a fusion experience zoo, botanical garden, aquarium, art gallery, natural history museum, and research institute. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has recognized the Desert Museum for over 25 years of continuous accreditation.

We are seeking qualified applicants with six months to one year of retail customer service, cash-handling, and computer experience to join our amazing Retail team. Familiarity with the Desert Museum is a plus. Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings is essential since these are our peak visitation days. Reserve Status positions are non-benefited and may work, on average, 18 hours or less per week. Job Title: Guest Services Assistant- Retail
Department: Retail/Operations
Reports To: Retail Sales Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, 8 -18 hours per week

Summary:
The Guest Services Assistant-Retail provides outstanding service and plays an integral role in contributing to the mission of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The position is flexible and accommodates ever-changing business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creates outstanding guest interactions with a guest friendly, professional demeanor.
  • Processes sales transactions primarily within the retail stores. May assist with admissions transactions as needed.
  • Follows Museum and department cash handling and reconciliation procedures.
  • Uses upsell techniques to increase sales and donations.
  • Assists guests with stroller and mobility device rentals.
  • Ensures stores remain appropriately stocked and visually merchandised as designated by supervisory staff.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the retail stores and surrounding areas.
  • May assist guests with lost or found items and separated parties.
  • Occasionally assists the fulfillment of symbolic adoption packages, online orders, and Desert Museum press book purchases.
  • Answers a variety of general queries including wayfinding, schedules, facilities, collections, etc.
  • Some duties, including cashiering for special events and other guest service functions, require working outdoors.
  • Promotes a safe and sanitary work environment at all times. Practices safe work habits, participates in sanitation procedures, and reports hazards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 
Position Requirements

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate with the general public using guest friendly language.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with challenges involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:
General knowledge of retail POS and/or CRM systems or the ability to learn and develop functional use of systems.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
None required.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of retail operations, guest service, sales through service, and cash handling skills.

Physical Demands:

  • The ability to communicate effectively with the general public.
  • The ability to use standard office equipment and technologies including computers, keyboards, touch screens, telephones, etc.
  • The ability to spend extended periods of time sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
  • The ability to safely traverse through an unpaved natural environment.
  • Ability to withstand extended periods exposed to the adverse weather conditions typical of southern Arizona.
  • Must be able to perform all essential job functions unaided or with reasonable accommodation.

Work Environment:
Primarily an office and retail store setting. Occasional exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions. Moderate noise levels.
