Exhibitions Fabrication Specialist 

Description

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Exhibitions Fabrication Manager, the Fabrication Specialist will focus on maintaining the Exhibitions shop space, assisting with the oversight of the construction, installation, and maintenance of museum display casework and scenic elements. You will alsooversee the fabrication and installation of artifact mounts within exhibition galleriesand assist in many aspects of preparation for exhibition production.

You Will:

  • Work closely with the Exhibition Design team to ensure fabrication methods are aligned with creative intent.
  • Work in all phases of design (Concept, design development, construction drawings) and develop technical drawings to illustrate the concept through completion.
  • Assist with the creation of project schedule and cost including material estimation, lead time, and finishing timelines.
  • Fabricate using multiple different materials and techniques.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and promote safe working practices within the Exhibitions shop space.
  • Liaise between external fabricator(s) and the Museum during exhibition rotations.
  • Ensure external fabricators methods take into consideration rotations and flexibility needed for future exhibitions.
  • Liaise with the Museum Operations department and Exhibition fabricator to ensure the delivery information is registered promptly with the General Contractor and on-site unloading and access are uninterrupted.
  • Work on multiple projects that are in different phases concurrently.
  • Assist with mock-ups of the case and scenic layout.
  • Create and maintain the internal shop project schedules, fabrication shop material inventory list, shop tool inventory list, and internal shop task list.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • 3+ years in Design/shop-related fields including Industrial Design, Engineering, Interior, and Furniture Design, Tradeshow and Exhibit, Props, and Cabinetry.
  • Experience with Vector Works, Rhino, or other similar CAD programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of common construction methods, techniques, materials, and applications.
  • Proficiency with common shop equipment and practices: hand tools, power tools, table saws, panel saws, routers, laminating, etc.
  • Understanding of construction techniques, familiarity with wood and composite wood substrates, acrylics, plastic laminates, adhesives, wood finishes, paints, basic metals and finishes, basic metal fabrication, and CNC machinery.
  • Understanding of object conservation requirements and mounts details to ensure construction methods align with institutional standards.
  • Experience with art handling work at a museum, fine art handling company, gallery, or artist studio is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Climb and work on ladders.
  • Intermittent walking, standing, and stooping.
  • Lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Work around paints, cleansers, and other similar products.
  • Work in spaces that collect dust.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of work conditions including an active construction site.
  • Ability to drive a forklift and use material-handling equipment (the Museum will certify).
