Wage:  $17.86 - $18.57

Hours:  32 hours

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This individual is responsible for managing all aspects of the Children’s Ministry of the Crisis Shelter. They also oversee volunteer training and ensuring the use of appropriate curriculum- taking into consideration the children’s developmental stages and ability.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIES:

This position directly supervises all volunteers and children involved in The Children’s Ministry at the Crisis Shelter.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key Result Area #1: Leadership and Management

  • Oversee and manage all facets of the children’s department.
  • Provide direct supervision to staff, interns, and volunteer staff.
  • Meet bi-weekly with staff to provide strong communication, support, and accountability.
  • Communicate concerns or issues regarding staff, residents, and program pieces the CS Director.
  • Develop, implement, & supervise the scheduling of Volunteer Staff, and Associate Staff.
  • Develop, oversee, & communicate systems and policies that promote spiritual and developmental growth.
  • Collaborate with other areas of the ministry to provide consistent services/curriculum for resident’s children.
  • Manage children’s program including; program curriculum, classroom supplies, outings, and food, keeping the Director informed
  • Conflicts will be resolved using the Peace Maker tools.
  • Participates in holding others and self-accountable and participates in self-evaluation process.
  • Comes to meetings prepared and with a positive, supportive attitude.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

 

Key Result Area #2: Train/Manage Associate Staff & Volunteers

  • Ensure UGM policies and procedures are followed.
  • Work with volunteers and the house facilitator to ensure a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Work with the Kitchen Supervisor to acquire snacks supplies for children’s programs.
  • Communicate with the moms of children at drop off and pick up each day.
  • Develop a program designed to support various ages of children’s developmental progress and spiritual growth.
  • Model and train volunteers in communicating with moms about the progress & needs of their children on a daily basis.
  • Collaborate with Crisis Shelter director and staff on planning & implementing Children’s program components for special events such as outreach, camp and fun outings, etc.
  • Assess and address each child’s physical, spiritual, social, emotional and educational needs.
  • Work with moms to assess & address their parenting needs & their child's developmental progress within the first two weeks.
  • Work with moms and staff to create safety & parenting plans within the first week.
  • Work with Homework club as well as children’s ministry providers and mentor’s within the first week.
  • Support and provide contracts for pre-teen children. Monitor their boundaries.
  • Teach and model biblical parenting.
  • Provide parenting education opportunities weekly.

 

 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Committed Christian, able and willing to model servant-leadership and interested in being part of a ministry for the poor, homeless, drug addicted and mentally ill. Grounded in the Christian faith as a mature, active member of the body of Christ. In accordance with Union Gospel Mission Statement of Purpose, Statement of Vision and Statement of Faith.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills - exercise compassion and discernment while modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • As a unified team member, will honor the leadership, chain of command, and standards and ministry objectives of Union Gospel Mission.
  • Follows UGM policy regarding addressing and resolving conflict amongst team members, volunteers, & residents.
  • Know and able to communicate and embrace UGM’s cultural Core Values and their indicators. The Core Values are applied and observed
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Computer literate with a high proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook; able to complete documents, reports and accurately record information.
  • Excellent communication skills: written, oral, and instructional.
  • Prove to be teachable: organized with the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks at once; able to listen and follow instructions.
  • Prove to be a leader: show ability to listen empathically, respond appropriately in emotional situations, and resolve difficult guests and situations in an understanding way with the overall safety of the shelter in mind.
  • Prove to be an effective manager; show ability to lead RA’s and associate staff in standard operating procedures with the goal of empowering and developing them to become leaders.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:

Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously = 67%-100%

  • Requires working with a diverse population, many of whom struggle with homelessness, addiction and mental illness – continuously.
  • Work is primarily indoors. It requires climbing stairs, sitting, standing, bending, and reaching - Continuously.
  • Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about the store on a regular and ongoing basis – Continuously.
  • Requires the ability to hear, see, and speak clearly – continuously.

 

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS USED:

  • Computer, Microsoft Office, including excel, word and power point, copier, scanner, fax machine and multi-line phone system

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Two-year college degree in applicable field of study preferred, or equivalent years of experience.
  • Two plus years’ experience working with homeless families in crisis.
  • Experience managing children and positive parental interactions
  • Proven to be a fast learner and able to quickly assess and address issues as they arise
