SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the strategy and execution of Woodland Park Zoo’s comprehensive campaign from 2018 through 2024. Campaign-related leadership responsibilities include working in concert with the Development department and across the organization (including the Board of Directors and volunteer campaign leadership) in establishing systems, translating campaign priorities and impacts, and implementing strategies and tactical plans to coordinate campaign fundraising effectively.

The Director creates an overall giving strategy that results in significant growth of principal, major and planned gifts, ensuring donors are inspired by Woodland Park Zoo’s wildlife conservation mission and engaged in supporting the organization. The position manages a portfolio of donors and is responsible for strategy development, proposal materials, budgeting and all associated activities necessary to cultivate, track, solicit and steward all supporters of $25,000+ or more. In addition, this position manages the major and planned gifts fundraising team that is responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding supporters at the $5,000+ level. The Director works closely with the Data Services team on prospect research, portfolio development, oversight and tracking.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead all stakeholders through the planning, development, adaptations, and daily operations of the campaign, ensuring campaign fundraising remains on target and all aspects of campaign activities lead to a successful conclusion by December 31, 2024.
  • Partner with cross-zoo leaders, Development and Engagement colleagues and the Board of Directors to set, shape, manage, package, and execute campaign priorities and activities.
  • Champion a culture of philanthropy among staff, board members and donors, serving as an active member of the zoo’s Senior Leadership Team.
  • Lead and manage a team of major gifts and legacy giving officers to achieve annual revenue goals.
  • Establish entrepreneurial and creative approaches to cultivate new principal, major and planned giving donors to Woodland Park Zoo.
  • Conduct analyses and assess performance to identify opportunities and inform annual and campaign plans.
  • Develop and manage relationships with a portfolio of 50 to 75 new and existing principal, major and legacy individual donors, as well as individual family foundations.
  • Create and implement an overall strategic plan for growing the Individual Giving program, including best practice processes and metrics to support ongoing growth of leadership gifts, and planned giving programs.
  • Practice moves management to advance prospects towards solicitation and to continually replenish the individual donor pipeline, coordinating with the Institutional Giving, Annual Giving, Data Services, Donor Relations, and other teams across the zoo.
  • Use existing systems and processes to track donor/prospect activity and establish shared accountability for the Individual Giving team to utilize systems.
  • Support the ongoing professional development and cross training of the Individual Giving Team and advance effective communications and collaborations within the Development team.
  • Ensure compliance with all related national and local policies and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethics.
  • Represent Woodland Park Zoo at fundraising and other events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; and ten (10) or more years of development experience, with proficiency in annual fundraising and major gift work; with three (3) or more years of experience in managing a team of gift officers; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A proven successful record of achieving annual fundraising goals, as an individual and leading a team.
  • Ability to work effectively within diverse teams and environments while able to work independently and treat everyone with respect.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Mastery of fundraising best practices and ability to execute a tactical plan, while continually seeking to improve effectiveness of the position and displaying an on-going commitment to learning and self-improvement.
  • Detailed understanding of bequests and other planned giving vehicles.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, inspire a team to achieve goals, and support growing individual giving programs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and organizational communication with the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
  • Ability to effectively present information to zoo management, public groups, donors, and zoo board members.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities and coach employees to develop their full potential. Provide helpful, behaviorally specific feedback to others, regularly meet with employees to review their development progress and express confidence in their abilities to be successful and engage team members in open and honest communication.
  • Ability to ensure strategic vision becomes alive through the departmental operations, processes, and policies.
  • Ability to identify the need for change, envision change, suggest changes that promote positive impacts with a lens for diversity and inclusion, and empower employees as champions of change culture. Provide clear vision and communication regarding change.
  • Ability to evaluate problems and to effectively solve in a timely manner, while responding to concerns with empathy and inclusivity.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes weekends, evenings, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge or similar CRM and fundraising software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may be required to lift up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay: Competitive salary commensurate with experience
