Definition and Purpose
The Lead Food Service Student Assistant is a part-time, non-benefited position working with a Federal and State funded Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and is under the direct supervision of the Food Program Supervisor. It is the role of the Food Program Student Lead to assist the Food Program Supervisor in leading the student kitchen assistants through their shift responsibilities and maintaining a clean, organized work environment.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience
Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.

Food service and nutrition coursework or food service experience preferred
Lead/Supervisory Responsibilities
Monitor work flow and daily tasks of the student kitchen assistants in cooperation with the Food Program Supervisor.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Food Program Supervisor regarding the work performed in the kitchen and areas for improvement.
Lead and work alongside the student kitchen assistants in the preparation of food and dietary substitutions.
Ensure that meals prepared adhere to all Federal CACFP and Center nutritional standards.
Provide effective training to student kitchen assistants.
Attend and assist in the planning of annual staff training workshops and other periodic planned training opportunities.
Help cover shifts as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Establish and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Display understanding and ability to perform all student lead responsibilities.
Provide oversight for all aspects of food production, flow, sanitation and kitchen management.
Ensure consistent, accurate information is properly disseminated to staff.
Routine cleaning and maintenance of all food program-related equipment and the service area.
Ensure all forms, production records and prep sheets are accurate and up-to-date.
Generate reports and record keeping forms within the CC Food computer program.
Maintain accurate daily milk count and temperature logs.
Assist with food preparation following menu production worksheets and standardized preparation guidelines.
Deliver meals on time in a safe and sanitary manner.
Ensure accurate freezer pull and completion of daily prep.
Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats.
Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area.
Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers.
Maintain an awareness of safety concerns and risk management.
Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers.
Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures.
Demonstrate a commitment to student development and leadership.
Be neat, clean, tactful, and courteous to all staff and customers.
Work with all staff members in a cooperative manner.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Period of Employment
Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.
Compensation and Hours
Pay Rate: $15.00 per hour dependent on experience
Must commit to working 12-15 hours per week.
One year minimum commitment preferred.
