Director of Development 

About the Organization Founded in 1996 by parents who sought the very best treatment available to deliver opportunities to children and adolescents living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Minnesota Autism Center (MAC) provides therapeutic services for children ages 18 months to 21 years who have ASD.



MAC's services are center-based and in-home, and include speech and occupational therapy, assessment and diagnosis services, and individual and family therapy. At any given time, MAC serves approximately 370-400 clients throughout Minnesota at 17 centers located in Eagan, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Fridley, Vadnais Heights, Minnetonka, Woodbury, Duluth, Virginia, Mankato, Rochester, Red Wing, New Ulm, Medford, Hutchinson and Cambridge.



 
Description

The Director has strategic and operational responsibility for the Development Department and facilitates the efforts of staff/contractors and volunteers in raising funds and establishing The Minnesota Autism Centers position in the community. The Director provides the leadership necessary to develop and successfully implement a comprehensive fund development program to ensure adequate ongoing private funding support for the organization. In addition, the Director is part of the executive leadership team.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  1. The Director manages all fund development efforts for the organization to ensure a comprehensive, prioritized, and coordinated effort in keeping with the organizations mission, visions, values, and strategic plan. Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • participating in defining and prioritizing the fund development objectives of the organization;
    • coordination of fundraising efforts in the areas of individual giving, grants, foundations and corporations, donor communications, and special events;
    • developing and monitoring the development budget; and
    • working with the Foundation Board and any Board Committees

Performance standards include:

  1. Participates with the CEO in identifying and prioritizing the major outcomes of the short and long range fund development
  2. Establishes and maintains a network that provides opportunities to meet and form strong relationships with funders, major benefactors, stakeholders, and volunteers.
  3. Oversees the production and coordination of development related informational materials, publications, and grant writing proposals.
  4. Develops the budgets for annual and long-range activities, monitors expenditures, and operates within budgeted guidelines.
  5. In order to assist MAC in achieving its fund development objectives, provides monthly activity reports to the CEO, the Foundation Board of Directors, and the full Board of Directors, as appropriate.
  6. Works collaboratively with CEO to determine and clarify development needs.

  1. Develops and implements strategies to educate, cultivate, and pursue fund development opportunities consistent with the priorities collaboratively established with the CEO. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • identifying and recruiting volunteer leadership;
    • developing strategies to achieve development objectives;
    • facilitating the work of the Development Department, including
      • pursuing grants and soliciting foundations to support programming and operations
      • establishing relationships for corporate and individual giving
      • manage fund development communications and event planning

Performance standards include:

        1. Retaining contractors and recruiting volunteers to support the various functions of the fund development program.
        2. Identifying and helping to recruit leadership volunteers for MACs development efforts.
        3. Facilitating the work of volunteer leadership that identifies, cultivates, and solicits donors.
        4. Solicitating gifts.

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience in similar positions including nonprofit development, fundraising, grant writing, cultivating individual donors, budgeting, public relations and communications, sales and volunteer and staff management.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate positive relationships with foundations, corporations, local businesses, churches, individual donor prospects and volunteers.
  • Ability to solicit and obtain donations
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail in order to manage many different tasks and strategies simultaneously.
  • Ability to provide accurate and timely reports to the funders, and organization leadership.
  • Ability to model respectful and inclusive behavior consistent with MAC’s mission.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports.
  • Effective knowledge of appropriate technology and software to communicate effectively in print and electronically.
  • Ability to contribute to MAC as a leader and team member.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities and ensure accountability.
