Hring Pay Range:

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: $21.03 - $26.29/hr; Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: $23.45 - $29.31/hr

Full Pay Range:

Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: $21.03 - $31.55/hr; Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: $23.45 - $35.18/hr

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance work necessary to maintain County Road and Bridge Department vehicles and equipment in good condition and respond to calls during off hours as required. These positions will also troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems as needed. The Mechanic levels are distinguished from one another by the independence of work, level of skills, education, and training required in each position. The position levels represent an internal career ladder and professional growth opportunity, and may be filled at either the level I, II, or III based upon the expertise of the applicant.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Equipment Mechanic I: Works under close supervision and performs basic and routine mechanical work while gaining mastery. The Mechanic I is an entry level position, designed to provide on the job training.

Equipment Mechanic II: Works independently under minimal supervision and performs more technical maintenance and diagnostic services. The Mechanic II is a journey level position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Equipment Maintenance & Diagnostics

  • Responsible for routine maintenance such as safety inspections, changing oil and filters, and replacing brakes.
  • Responsible for a wide variety of routine and complex heavy vehicle repair and maintenance according to level and ability. Repair and maintenance may include gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic and brake systems, and other major equipment components, as necessary.
  • Complete a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment including excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders.
  • According to level and ability, responsible for fabricating, welding, and modifying parts and equipment. Level III performs welding duties as a welder, operating welding equipment, cutting torch, grinder, drill press and related hand tools to fabricate equipment parts or repair parts as needed.

Division/Department Support

  • May transport operators and parts in the field.
  • Maintains and submits equipment repair and maintenance records.
  • Orders parts and supplies for equipment in accordance with County purchasing and receiving procedures. May assist in annual inventory of supplies and tools.
  • May train new staff as required based on experience level.

  • Ability to assess vehicle condition to determine whether the vehicle is safe for operation.
  • Ability to safely operate and use hand, air and power tools and testing devices.
  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of diagnosis and repair of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Some knowledge of the use of computers and related software to maintain records.
  • Knowledge of basic techniques of radio communication.
  • Basic arithmetic functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide)
  • Ability to speak, read, and write the English language.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to pass required DOT physical and drug screening test as required by FMCSA.
  • Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor for long periods of time, such as snow plowing operations.
  • Ability to work autonomously with a strong team focus, and act as a lead worker if required.
  • Ability to adapt behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

(Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as determined by Garfield County may be substituted for the requirements above.)

Education & Experience:

Mechanic I: High school diploma or equivalent, and trade-school level training in heavy equipment and diesel maintenance are preferred

Mechanic II: In addition to level one requirements class A CDL and min. 2 years’ experience

Licenses & Certifications:

Minimum valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License

Tech school for diesel preferred

ASE certification for preventative maintenance and brake systems preferred

Note: This position requires a pre-employment background check with will include a Criminal Check, and Motor Vehicle Record.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check. 

Note: This position requires a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

 

Tools, Tool box and Scanners

All basic tools and equipment are supplied by the County.

 

Required Travel:

Frequent travel to and from job sites and field work.

 

Work Hours:

Typical work hours for this position are Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday. 4-10 hour shifts

This position may be required to work weekends and holidays depending on department needs.

 

Physical Activities and Work Environment:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold; and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles and dust.  The employee is often exposed to the possibility of bodily injury from electrical shock or mechanical hazard.  The employee occasionally works in and around ongoing construction; and occasionally in high, precarious places; and is often exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, balance, crouch and crawl; is frequently required to lift up to 10 pounds; is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and to exert up to 100 pounds of force; is occasionally required to maintain body balance while ascending or descending ladders or open stairs, and to maintain body equilibrium while bending at the waist or at the knees.  The employee is routinely required to work with the hand or hands in handling, seizing, holding, or grasping motions and with the fingers in fingering, picking and pinching actions to operate objects, tools or controls.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 

The employee is required to drive and operate heavy equipment in all weather conditions, often at remote worksites.  The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform most of the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to participate in random drug testing to meet CDL requirements of position.
