SUMMARY

This position serves as a key member of the People & Culture team at Woodland Park Zoo. This position is responsible for managing the development, implementation, and administration of compensation, benefits programs, the Human Resources Information System (HRIS), policies, and procedures. This position is also responsible for ensuring that the zoo compensation and benefit programs are consistently administered in compliance with internal policies and government regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Work with VP and Employee Engagement Manager to develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the zoo’s strategic plans.
  • Manage and oversee human resource programs including but not limited to: compensation including payroll, benefits, and compliance with employment laws.
  • Business owner of the HRIS, which includes serving as the key contact to the HRIS vendor, developing user procedures, guidelines, documentation, and training for HRIS processes/functionality.
  • Manage and oversee compensation policies, guidelines, and procedures, and provide guidance to staff; recommend revisions that are cost-effective and consistent with market trends and zoo objectives.
  • Manage compensation objectives and maintain knowledge of market trends and best practices.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommend best practices. Review policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Manage and oversee the zoo’s payroll and compliance with city, state, and federal regulations.
  • Manage and approve payment amounts for medical, dental, life insurance, LTD, 403(b) Retirement, L&I premiums, union fees, and other payroll benefits.
  • Manage employee benefit programs including medical, dental, life and other group insurance, flexible spending accounts (FSA), health reimbursement accounts (HRA), wellness, retirement, and paid time off.
  • Manage benefit renewal with brokers including open enrollment process.
  • Manage leaves and ADA programs.
  • Create, prepare, and distribute informational materials about benefits, compensation, and policies.
  • Manage worker’s compensation and unemployment claims with third party vendors.
  • Provide strong customer service to employees and supervisor requests for information and services in a timely manner.
  • Maintain department records. Always handle confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner.
  • Lead and manage a variety of projects and initiatives for the department, as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, compensation, benefits, and employment law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources from an accredited college or university; and ten (10) or more years of experience in payroll, compensation, hris, and/or benefit administration; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws, payroll processes and procedures, accounting principles and practices, personnel rules and policies, and collective bargaining contract provisions.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, within diverse teams and environments and treat everyone with respect.
  • Ability to evaluate problems and effectively solve them in a timely manner. Respond to concerns with empathy and inclusivity. Respond appropriately to conflict.

  • Ability to listen, give and receive feedback in a productive and professional manner. Able to translate vision into planning and implementation.
  • Ability to audit work for accuracy and quality. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to identify and suggest changes that promote positive impacts with a lens for diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Ability to work in an extremely fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and manage multiple projects with competing demands while maintaining a commitment to excellence. Ability to quickly and methodically adjust priorities when needed.
  • Proficiency with UKG, Paylocity or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS systems.
  • Ability and willingness to learn other software programs as necessary.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS

  • Human Resources (SHRM-SCP or SPHR) Certification.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may be required to lift up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
