Assistant Library Director 

Description

The Martin County Library is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Library Director.   The Assistant Library Director is a full time hourly position - scheduled 35 hours per week.

 

POSITION PURPOSE

Under general supervision, the Assistant Library Director is responsible for a variety of technical and administrative duties to include maintaining a current understanding of the automated library system, and the supervision and training of all Circulation Technicians, pages and volunteers. In addition, the incumbent assumes responsibility for the library in the Director’s absence.

This person also serves as the reference librarian for the library, answering reference questions on the basis of referrals. Responsible for selecting adult materials for the library and ordering them, along with sending them for cataloging and completing any necessary copy cataloging upon their return. In charge of maintaining the adult collection, including weeding and repair of materials. Supervises circulation staff who assist in technical services, processing, repairs and branch rotation. Works at circulation desk as needed, including Saturdays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises and trains all Circulation Technicians and Library Pages and schedules their hours of work.
  • Works the circulation desk, including but not limited to filling in hours for absent staff.
  • Responsible for building and staff emergencies outside of normal working hours, including scheduling and illness related absences.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves all circulation-related patron disputes not resolved by Circulation Technicians or other library staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves branch circulation issues as required.
  • Represents the library at user group meetings and confers with regional library staff on issues related to the automated library system.
  • Assists library director with interviewing and hiring library staff. Assumes responsibility for the library when the library director is absent.
  • Provides overall oversight of the library’s automated system, including reports, lists and mailings.
  • Maintains the collection thru ordering, weeding, inventory and repair.
  • Prepares materials for the catalog by barcoding, sending to regional library, copy cataloging and printing labels.
  • Performs reference work as needed.
  • Works at the circulation desk.
  • Develops, plans and assists with programming and library events.
  • Participates in continuing education and training sessions on position applicable law and regulation changes, computer skills and other position related matters.
  • Performs other work-related duties as required.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The position has good working conditions in general, but is a diversified job requiring sustained mental effort related to organizational issues, planning and technical areas.

The individual may encounter significant emotional strain or tension. There is sustained exposure to sitting and standing. There is continuous exposure to computer keyboards and video screens and moderate exposure to lifting up to 40 pounds.

 

Continuous: Keyboarding; Work requires high attention to detail; Work with frequent deadlines.

Frequent: Walk; Stand; Sit; Repetitive movement; Exposure to emotional public; Exposure to offensive language.

Occasional: Bend or stoop; Kneel or squat; Exposed to annoying odor; Exposure to threats; Exposure to trauma; Some mental effort and stress involved resulting in frustration; Considerable mental effort and stress.

Intermittent: Work with arms above shoulder; Lift or carry less than 10 lbs.; Exposed to blood borne pathogens; Exposed to sickening odor; Exposed to slippery conditions; Inability to leave work station for long periods of time; Exposure to deadly assault.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in library science, business, liberal arts, social science, education or related field.
  • Three years of progressive experience in related field along with the skills, knowledge and abilities required; or equivalent combined education and experience.

 

LICENSURE

  • Valid Driver’s License

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles that apply to library operations and the ability to apply them effectively.
  • Considerable knowledge of general library operations and funding.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of general personnel administration procedures.
  • Ability to supervise subordinates in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to select and train new library personnel in an effective manner.
  • Ability to operate computers, tablets and mobile devices and other general office equipment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other library and accounting related applications a must. Ability to learn new software programs and web-based systems as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing and have good public relations skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
