Description

The Carlington Youth program aims to provide vulnerable youth in the community with opportunities to engage in activities and positive experiences that promote self-development, community engagement, as well as academic achievement. The Youth Worker (YW) provides individual support via case management, crisis intervention, as well as group-based activities to promote social recreation and life skills development to vulnerable youth in the community. The Youth Worker leads existing programs (Student Will All Graduate) and participates in community outreach to support youth within their social, family, and school environments. The Youth Worker will also work to develop, implement, and monitor a new community partnership initiative with the Ottawa Sport and Recreation group (OSEG) focused on Youth-Athlete mentorship to enhance existing youth programs.

Program-Related Activities

  • Participates in the development of the program activities, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all aspects of the youth programs, SWAG and RYMP.
  • Works closely with the Children and Youth Program Coordinator and team members
  • Works in collaboration with relevant community partners to strengthen and further develop existing programs, including:
    • Ottawa Carleton District School Board staff and Ottawa Catholic School Board staff to ensure access to individual client’s academic needs and to match to curriculum requirements.
    • OSEG counterpart to ensure the success of the RYMP Program.
  • Organize, plan and facilitates training workshops for Mentors and Mentees
  • Plan and supervise mentorship activities
  • Facilitates youth-related events and opportunities
  • Plans and delivers day to day socio-recreational and educational activities promoting healthy child and youth development and supporting optimal personal growth and academic outcomes for program participants and youth.
  • Supports youth participants through short-term assessment, referrals, and advocacy activities with youth and with students in the SWAG program.
  • Performs intake assessment, supportive listening, case management and some crisis intervention functions.
  • Engages with parents, school staff to support youth and address any obstacles/challenges to positive experience in program and success in school, as needed.
  • Identifies needs of each group and links individuals and groups to resources.
  • Provides practical assistance to youth, such as access to health and social services, providing information.
  • Advocates for youth and their families at the school level as needed to optimize opportunities and educational and social development of SWAG students.
  • Maintains effective communication of information among volunteer, mentors, tutors, teachers and other providers of services to students enrolled in SWAG and in RYMP.
  • Develops community program links and partnerships for mentoring opportunities, responding to student/youth interests and invitations to participate
  • Assists in project promotion.
  • Keeps updated materials and provides links to community resources and supports for students in the areas of community involvement hours, part-time jobs and special options such as co-op ed and apprenticeship learning.
  • Ensures accountability by providing statistics and reports of activities, as required, and keeps client records, as required, within the safeguard of confidentiality.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of some post-secondary education and significant experience in counselling and program development.

Professional Experience

  • Three to five years full-time relevant experience working with youth in a community setting, including group-based facilitation and one on one support.
  • Three to five years experience in youth program development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation.
  • Experience with and an understanding of the barriers and challenges faced by youth in culturally diverse, low-income communities.
  • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities.
  • Experience establishing networks with relevant program and service providers.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

Key Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources, in particular services for youth which can support their individual, emotional and social development.
  • Thorough knowledge of Ontario secondary school curriculum and challenges, including knowledge of approaches to providing support to youth with special educational challenges and needs.
  • Proficiency in current assessment, case management and crisis intervention techniques as related to providing supportive listening to clients.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with small group dynamics and experience in facilitation appropriate to youth from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.

Linguistic Profile

  • This position is not designated under Carlington’s French Language Services Plan.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in a third language relevant to our client population is an asset.

Salary Range $25.33/hour - $29.79/hour
