Exhibition Graphics Specialist 

Description

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to Exhibition Design Manager, with additional oversite by the Creative Director, the Exhibition Graphics Specialist is responsible for ensuring the exhibition design through installation process is coordinated and executed smoothly. This includes updating design templates, photo retouching, working with external vendors for estimates to installation, tracking the various stages projects of through Airtable, and updating of exhibition presentation materials. You will work closely with internal clients and external vendors coordinating exhibition design work including accuracy, quality control, deadlines, and budget requirements. You may also work closely with freelance designers and interns. Interested candidates must submit a portfolio for review.

This is a temporary, full-time position through December 2022.

You Will:

  • Organize and coordinate graphics timelines: track from Airtable request phase to delivery, in line with overall exhibition needs.
  • Organize and coordinate reproductions timelines: track from Airtable request phase to delivery, in line with overall exhibition needs. May require coordinating with curators for press checks and sign-offs.
  • Organize and coordinate didactics/gallery text timeline: track from Airtable request phase to install, in line with overall exhibition needs (labels, wall texts, new requests, edits, rotations).
  • Coordinate graphics/vendor process from estimates to approvals to scouts to installs with onsite teams and/or vendors (contact details, vendor schedule, onsite booking via Resource Scheduler) and coordinate post install process documents and invoices.
  • Track estimates and invoices, routing all necessary information to ExPl for approval and payment.
  • Work with ExPl, Editorial, ExDP, Curatorial on workflow, processes, and timelines.
  • Coordinate with Media team to deliver digital layouts for final animation.
  • Do photo editing: retouching, sizing, pre-press, etc.
  • Coordinate freelancer schedules and availability.
  • Provide design and production support on Special Exhibitions.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, fine arts, or related MFA preferred.
  • 2+ years of design-related work experience.
  • A portfolio of produced work demonstrating a degree of creativity, diversity, productivity, and showcasing conceptual, color, and layout skills. Strong typographical skills required.
  • Knowledge and experience working with and printing on various substrates and materials.
  • Advanced experience in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Airtable, Confluence, and Slack.
  • Creative, conceptual, and critical thinking abilities with attention to detail and ability to proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Experience working independently and effectively with others, managing deadlines, budgets, clients, and vendors.
  • Experience managing print production and trafficking jobs with knowledge of papers and printing processes.
  • Strong written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Must be able to create an organized production schedule that incorporates time for both scheduled and unscheduled projects.
