In-Gallery Programs Specialist

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Manager of In-Gallery Programs, the Specialist, in addition to programmatic administrative support, will develop and implement in-gallery programs including inquiry-based and visitor-focused gallery tours, gallery conversations, panels, and other interpretative activities using in-person strategies to engage visitors. We are seeking an energetic, responsible, and experienced person to execute multiple in-person and ongoing programs per month to fulfill the goal of connecting gallery objects and stories to a multitude of visitors each year. Strong knowledge and experience working in customer service, museums, and project management are needed along with exceptional written and oral communication skills.

You Will:

  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute exhibition and collection-related in-gallery programs, including gallery tours, conversations, and pop-up activities.
  • Assist in the development and planning of a dynamic roster of programs while in dialogue with long-term and temporary exhibitions as well as the Academy Museum’s permanent collection.
  • Work collaboratively across museum departments to ensure effective and efficient communication and processes in support of gallery learning.
  • Apply organizational skills to create and track in-gallery programs, both private and public.
  • Research curatorial text and objects to be used for the development of in-gallery programs.
  • Contact presenters and additional stake holders about programs; produce correspondence, contracts, and travel itineraries; maintains program files; and coordinate other administrative duties.
  • Coordinate and keep record of travel and accommodations for guest speakers and talent in an efficient manner.
  • Establish and maintain schedules for educators, surveys, records, and attendance data for in-gallery programs.
  • Continuously analyze and maintain records to improve in-gallery program offerings.
  • Ensure wide accessibility for programs via accommodations.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience creating and implementing successful gallery programming for a variety of audiences.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of periods and styles of film and filmmaking.
  • Superior public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple programs for multiple audiences concurrently.
  • Ability to multi-task, project-manage, and move work forward in timely and efficient manners.
  • Proven track record of creating mission-driven programming that aligns audience needs with collections and exhibitions.
  • Comfort in working with intergenerational audiences.
  • Creative thinker with outstanding customer service and active listening skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • The ability to work with Academy Members, contractors, artists, and staff.
  • Flexibility in schedule to accommodate evening and weekend programs.
