The Learning Specialist III will handle developing educational materials for new and existing coders, initial new coder training, and onboarding and documentation of new client policies and procedures.

Essential Functions: In addition to working as prescribed in our Performance Factors, specific responsibilities of this role include:

  • Develop coding orientation and training programs, specific to each client, and in collaboration with coding managers and clients.
  • Educate coders/new hires on facility guidelines, computer systems, and EMRs.
  • Responsible for working with our clients and Coding Managers to develop client specific guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain strict adherence to the guideline approval process.
  • Ensure client guidelines, policy, and procedures align with standard coding guidelines.
  • Ensure coding team is kept abreast of regulatory and/or client changes through regular communication and development of training materials, when applicable.
  • Provide consultation and expertise to internal management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of coding education.
  • Assess the educational needs of coding staff, and develop or resource educational materials to meet those needs.
  • Develop or resource all training materials and coding aids for both formal training and use by coders in daily work.
  • Serve as a technical resource for all involved personnel; ensure that information is accurate and current, meeting professional coding standards.
  • Consistently demonstrate an excellent attitude, and work to strengthen the team.
  • Provide excellent customer service to external and internal customers/clients and teammates.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
Education/Experience/Certification Requirements

  • 2 year degree or equivalent experience; AHIMA or AAPC certification required
  • Has a thorough grasp and understanding of ICD-10-CM, PCS and CPT coding principles and guidelines and can apply those standards with expertise.
  • Actively holds one or more of the following credentials: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, COC, and/or CIC.
  • Minimum of 5-years’ experience coding.
  • Experience coding 2 or more Specialties beyond diagnostics OR ER Coding with Facility and ProFee Leveling with infusion/injection charging OR inpatient only.
  • Ability to identify and interpret strategic and operational training/development needs.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate training plans, curricula, and methodology.
  • Ability to share knowledge in an effective way that enhances learning and application of new skills.
  • Advanced communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to follow through on issues to resolution.
  • Must be able to act both independently and as a team member.
