SUMMARY

This position acts as clinical support staff for the Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD) clinic. SUD Medical Assistant will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. Medical Assistant must be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients within the clinic. This position is responsible for coordinating care to assure high quality, compassionate patient care is provided. May also be required to perform general clerical duties, (keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment) as needed. The expectations outlined in this job description may vary slightly depending on the practice in which you are assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the director supervision of the Practice Manager and Clinical Operations Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform).

  1. Responsible for taking vital signs, injections, venipuncture, the collection of body fluid specimens for analysis and any other procedure in which they have been trained when ordered by the proper professionals;
  2. Demonstrates organizational skills and the ability to work with the public and a general working knowledge of operating an office in a medical or clinic setting;
  3. Assists in managing a specific caseload when their training and / or experience of working in an outpatient treatment program qualify them to do so;
  4. May process incoming and outgoing correspondence;
  5. Perform other duties as assigned

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.

Works in an office environment with minimal exposure to noise, temperature discomfort and lighting inadequacies. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT

All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA’s) and duties are essential. An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following:

  • Ability to multitask
  • Will be required to learn and work with multiple software/hardware products.

  • Knowledge of HIPPA regulations
  • Skill in use of typewriter, calculator, copy machine and computers.
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations positively.
  • Ability to accept and perform other duties when needed.
  • Basic knowledge of correct English usage, spelling and punctuation.
  • Basic knowledge of modern office practices, materials and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of medical practice and examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Ability to compare names and numbers accurately and to make arithmetical computations.
  • Ability to write neatly and legibly.
  • Ability to learn routines and procedures quickly.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Some knowledge of insurance requirements and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of filing systems.

EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support certification or obtain with in 6 months of hire date.
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Prefer completion of a Medical Assistant program through an accredited organization. Must obtain with in one year of hire date.
