About the Center for Policing Equity:

The Center for Policing Equity uses evidence-based approaches to social justice problems and conducts research to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

Position Description:

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is seeking a Senior Research Associate to manage and support high-priority research efforts related to racial justice and equitable public safety within our growing Science program. The Research Associate will combine their research and evaluation expertise, substantive knowledge of racial equity and public safety, and strong research project management skills to manage and execute a variety of short- and long-term projects. The Research Associate will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of social scientists, data scientists and analysts, community engagement professionals, and other professionals in managing and executing high-priority mixed-methods research and evaluation initiatives; co-developing and managing strategic research and data partnerships; and supporting varied efforts to expand and cohere CPE's public safety redesign science portfolio. This position requires a passion for advancing science on equitable public safety, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively under changing organizational conditions and evolving priorities. The long-term supervisory structure for this role is pending organizational alignment efforts in fall 2022; in the short term, the Senior Vice President of Science will supervise this role with support from the Program Manager, Science.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in developing and executing high-quality research and evaluation projects within CPE's public safety redesign science portfolio, which includes original research on the social determinants of public safety and evaluation of community-centered public safety approaches

  • Manage existing strategic research and data partnerships and develop new external partnerships in collaboration with Science leadership

  • Co-develop new lines of work and new collaborations, including by translating strategy into actionable goals and drafting research protocols and scopes of work

  • Collaborate with CPE's Community Engagement, Policy, and Justice Initiatives teams to ensure CPE's scientific and on-the-ground work inform each other and that our scientific work centers community needs and goals in alignment with CPE's Strategic Plan

  • Model a flexible, adaptable approach to scientific work that anticipates shifting conditions and priorities and views failure as an opportunity for discovery and growth

  • Facilitate effective collaboration among people with diverse professional backgrounds and lived experiences and facilitate development of shared norms for rigorous, equitable study of community-centered public safety efforts

  • Contribute to Science program infrastructure and organization-wide knowledge management efforts

Qualifications:

  • PhD in a social science, applied data science, public health, or related field preferred, or Master's degree with 3+ years of research, evaluation, and research management experience

  • Strong substantive knowledge of racial equity and public safety

  • Experience collaborating effectively with diverse, interdisciplinary teams and complex projects

  • Broad mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) research and evaluation experience

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to contribute individually and collaboratively to help shape processes and culture of a growing team

  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Ability to contribute to a strong, inclusive culture among a geographically dispersed team during a time of rapid growth

  • Comfortable adapting to changing circumstances, priorities, and goals

  • A deep passion for social justice and belief in CPE's mission
