SUMMARY

This position works coordinates and leads the day-to-day activities of the maintenance department staff and supports enforcement of policies and procedures regarding managing the zoo’s physical property, by performing the responsibilities outlined below.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following

  • Assists in planning, scheduling, coordinating, and participating in day-to-day and on-going project work assignments for maintenance staff.
  • Communicates plans and activities of maintenance staff with other departments for day-to-day activities and ongoing projects.
  • Assists in developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Instructs new employees on the use of tools and equipment, maintenance procedures and expectations, and provides expert advice.
  • Oversees the work of other department staff by planning training, assisting, monitoring, and evaluating the work, as directed.
  • Assists in developing and implementing aesthetic, sustainable, and functional improvements.
  • Assists in developing and implementing an ongoing Preventative Maintenance Program.
  • Assists in maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assists in planning for materials, equipment, and staffing required for work assignments or areas.
  • Maintains materials and supply inventories. Stocks, cleans, and organizes materials.
  • Facilitates meetings, including developing agendas, facilitating inclusive participation, building consensus, resolving conflict and capturing notes.
  • Supports department in maintenance of internal and external partnerships
  • Identifies and recommends policy and process improvements to department leadership.
  • Identifies and communicates safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Prepares reports for Maintenance Supervisor and Managers, as required.
  • Prepares equipment records; prepare field and weekly reports.
  • May lead and/or perform office relocations and delivery, storage and disposition of materials, forms, furniture and equipment. Performs other building services work including motor-pool operations, and event set-ups, change-overs and support.
  • Mows, edges, and maintains lawns using riding lawn mowers, assigned tractors, edgers, and sweepers.
  • Drives pickup trucks and other vehicles or equipment in connection with work activities.
  • Assists with the preventative maintenance and repair of roofs and drainage systems.
  • Aides and participates in the opening, backfilling, and shoring of trenches and other excavations.
  • Performs Maintenance Laborer duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree from an accredited two (2) year college or technical school in a related field, or four (4) or more years’ experience and/or training; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • OSHA 30 certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and overseeing operational protocols for information, safety, and maintenance programs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and organizational communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and requests and meet deadlines in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with professionalism.
  • Demonstrated organization skills, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook and Teams. Ability to work with customized databases and technology and to conduct internet research.
  • Ability to provide helpful, behaviorally specific feedback to others and engage in open and honest communication. Ability to evaluate problems and solve them in a timely manner; respond to concerns with empathy and inclusivity.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and remain flexible to changing tasks.
  • Ability to listen patiently and attentively, ability to express self clearly and effectively, and ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
  • Ability to employ best practices associated with position, with an approach to accuracy, while displaying an on-going commitment to learning and self-improvement.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within diverse teams and environments, while treating everyone with respect.
  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which may include weekends and some evenings and holidays.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Commercial Driver’s License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to variable outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to loud.

Pay: $29.37 per hour plus benefits

Employment Requirements: 

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a valid WA driver's license with a safe driving history. A criminal background check, driving record review, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment tuberculosis test will be required of the selected applicant

COVID-19 Vaccination  

  • As of November 24, 2021, employees working on or accessing zoo grounds are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If hired, you will be required to submit proof of vaccination by your first day of employment.
