The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a non-profit institution dedicated to the conservation and research of the Sonoran Desert Region with the goal of making the Sonoran Desert accessible, understandable, and valued. It is a fusion experience zoo, botanical garden, aquarium, art gallery, natural history museum, and research institute. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has recognized the Desert Museum for over 25 years of continuous accreditation.

We are seeking a driven, collaborative, and inspirational Manager to lead our Marketing and Media Department.

Brief Summary of the Role
The Marketing and Media Manager is responsible for planning, initiating, and implementing all public relations, marketing efforts, group sales, digital strategies, and special events. The individual plays an integral role in carrying out the mission of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The position is flexible and accommodates ever-changing business needs.

Job Title: Marketing & Media Manager
Department: Operations/Engagement
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary: $55,000-$60,000 D.O.E. plus a comprehensive benefit package which includes medical, dental, vision, life and LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with Roth option, Dual-level membership, paid holidays, personal business time, sick leave, and vacation.

Essential Duties (including, but not limited to):

  • Plans and implements a comprehensive public relations program that ensures the Museum remains top of mind locally, while building image regionally, nationally and within the industry and across all media platforms (print, broadcast, online).
  • Delivers an annual marketing strategic plan as well as a year-end annual report. Prepares bi-monthly marketing update reports.
  • Drafts and edits press releases and articles to high standard, consistent with company messaging and editorial guidelines.
  • Designs and executes multi-media awareness campaigns to increase community awareness of the Museum.
  • Cultivates and maintains media contacts and relationships on a local, regional and national level.
  • Serves as Museum spokesperson (when appropriate) in media-related matters.
  • Maintains and executes a viable crisis communications plan.
  • Professionally plans and executes all media and promotional appearances, including on-camera interviews and animal handling.
  • Develops, plans, and executes all press previews, grand opening ceremonies/events, etc.
  • Communicates with Museum staff to stay aware of events, cultivate on-going story ideas and provide support for all programs/departments.
  • Tracks public relations efforts and reach; provides analysis of effectiveness.
  • Develops and implements appropriate written policies for guiding the marketing of the Museum.
  • Plans and budgets all advertising dollars for general promotion of the Museum, events, new exhibits, etc.
  • Composes television and radio spots which convey the correct and consistent Museum message.
  • Secures partners to enhance and support programs and events.
  • Oversees content for the Museum website, social media, press releases, blogs, and videos.
  • Creates and distributes e-blasts to members and potential visitors.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships for the purpose of increasing attendance.
  • Provides leadership, direction and supervision to the Marketing Team while maintaining strong working relationships with all functional areas of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
  • Project manager for all special events.
  • Oversees the management of the website, ensuring an attractive and efficient user interface with updated and engaging content.
  • Assists in the management of all areas of operations, and participates in on-duty supervisory coverage needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises multiple employees and volunteers with a variety of job functions. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 
Position Requirements

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, media releases, and creative copy. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, the general public, and media.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of and/or ability to learn a variety of applications including but not limited to accounting software, CRM software, payroll systems, and project management software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid AZ driver license preferred, but not required.

  • Exceptional communication skills including the ability to act as a Museum spokesperson.

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
