Description

JOB SUMMARY:

This part-time position provides direct service to participants in the Girls Inc. Programs, ages 9-18. This position will work within the Girls Inc. Out of School Time Program-focused on inspiring and educating girls by delivering experiential curriculum with Girls Inc. and YWCA missions at the core of instruction. The Girls Inc. Youth Counselor will build and maintain relationships with the Minneapolis Public Schools and other youth serving agencies to meet necessary programming goals and objectives. Girls Inc. programming also includes the 4-week summer program of Girls Inc. Eureka!-a 5-year STEM program for girls, ages 13-18. Girls Inc. at YWCA Minneapolis supports girls in becoming self-sufficient, successful adults by building mentoring relationships in pro-girl spaces.

Start Date August 29, 2022

This position is 10-25 hours per week, September—May and 35+ hours per week June & July.

Hours are primarily Monday—Friday with additional programming on at least one Saturday per month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Implement girls-only programming

  • Implement the YWCA and Girls Inc.® mission & goals & manifest a belief in the value and potential of every participant in accordance with youth development principles and YWCA & Girls Inc. standards.
  • Plan and implement fun, hands-on lesson plans and activities that focus on math, science, economic literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and positive decision-making using Girls Inc. curriculum.
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused and accessible to a diverse student body.
  • Include processing opportunities to ensure participants make the connection between program content and their everyday lives and futures.
  • Recruit and maintain participation of girl program participants.
  • Connect and develop positive relationships with participants and their families.
  • Support implementation of YWCA Girls Inc. workshops, special events, and community outreach efforts.
  • Support Girls Inc. Eureka! through facilitation of activities in partnership with Program Manager and staffing team, communication with Eureka! girls and families, and retention efforts to maintain participants.
  • Maintain collaborations with youth-serving professionals, University of Minnesota partners, and Minneapolis Public Schools personnel.
  • Build and maintain a working relationship with Program Volunteers and direct and support them in programmatic responsibilities.

Program and Participant Documentation

  • Collect and track participant demographic, attendance and evaluation information within the online data management systems.
  • Write monthly summaries of activities and impact on participants.
  • Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes.

Seek continuous professional development

  • Participate in departmental and Girls Inc. team meetings.
  • Participate in educational activities and trainings to improve achievement of program goals.

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Girls Inc. Manager who reports to the Girls and Youth Operations Director who reports to the Vice President of Girls and Youth. This position will interact with Girls and Youth--Youth Counselors, Minneapolis Public Schools contacts and Community Site contacts. Critical relationships will include program participants and families.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Experience working with urban communities and diverse populations, cultures and economic experiences
  • Experience working with youth and facilitating effective, structured groups
  • Two years college or continuing education
  • Strong presentation, written and oral communication skills with demonstrated success in group facilitation and public speaking
  • Ability to carry out duties independently as well as in a team setting to meet desired goals
  • Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of people and styles and able to focus on the customer
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
  • Excellent planning organization and implementation skills
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Strong belief in the YWCA and ability to convey its importance
  • Exhibit commitment to social justice values and anti-oppression analysis

Preferred:

  • BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong.
  • Knowledge of youth development and gender-specific programming strategies
  • Experience in youth programming related to math, science, economic literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and positive decision-making.
  • Experience with data entry in online data management systems.
  • Experience working with young girls from low-income, diverse, and inner-city families.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites.

COMPENSATION: Range from $15.50-$17.00 per hour
