Position Title: Research Assistant

Status: Temporary, Part-Time (0.6 FTE)

Start Date: September 5, 2022

End Date: March 31, 2023 (with possibility of extension)

The Engagement & Planning for Inclusive Communities (EPIC) Lab at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is inviting applications for a temporary, part-time Research Assistant position with the possibility of extension subject to funding and the RA's performance. The EPIC Lab works with children/youth, their families, clinicians, and community partners to co-create studies focused on advancing knowledge about disability experiences across different community settings (e.g., education, transportation, play settings, hospitals, and home) with a view to advancing more inclusive communities. The RA will work with Dr. Tim Ross, a Scientist, Registered Professional Planner, and Assistant Professor (Status) with the Department of Geography & Planning and the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute at the University of Toronto.


In this role, the RA will have the opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary project team, EPIC Lab members, and community partners on a project titled, "Exploring the Housing Experiences and Community Participation of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities." This project is supported by a SSHRC CRSH New Frontiers in Research Fund grant. The RA's work will help to advance knowledge about how people with developmental disabilities experience housing, as well as how we could improve both their housing and create more inclusive planning/design processes. The work involved in this role will be focused on advancing more equitable, accessible, and inclusive communities. Previous experience/knowledge relating to qualitative methods, disability studies, community planning, housing, and inclusive design is an asset. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of a qualitative study design and protocol
  • Assist with participant recruitment, data collection (i.e. interviews, arts-based research activities, activity-tracking) and analysis
  • Engage and communicate with people with developmental disabilities, families, clinicians, and community partners
  • Conduct and document consent sessions with participants and their families, ensuring a positive and engaging experience for participants
  • Manage logistics for data collection (scheduling sessions with participants, booking rooms, preparing and testing equipment, etc.)
  • Prepare electronic surveys to support remote data collection
  • Assist with administrative tasks, ethics submissions, and reports 
  • Maintain study documentation
  • Assist in the preparation of knowledge translation materials (presentations, video tutorials, user manuals, etc.)
  • Contribute to manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed and professional journals
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be enrolled in, or completed, a Master's program in Disability Studies, Occupational Science, Rehabilitation or Health Sciences, Urban Planning, Architecture, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field 
  • Excellent academic and research record
  • Excellent writing skills 
  • Previous experience managing a research study
  • Exceptional organization, time management, and priority setting skills 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with interviewing and qualitative analysis (NVIVO) is an asset
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities is an asset
  • Experience with arts-based research is an asset
  • Advanced skills with MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Endnote
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software as needed
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing workload
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with knowledge mobilization is an asset
