Status: Exempt/Full-time

Salary: $59,183.07/annually

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, provides education on potential hazards to minimize industrial injury, sickness or damages to Nation’s property. Provide safety inspections of properties and employer sponsored events. Evaluate effectiveness of departmental safety and accident prevention programs.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development and revision of safety policies, procedures, guidelines, promotional materials, and training programs to ensure conformance with Tribal and Federal regulations and to increase departmental efficiency by reducing accidents and overall costs due to safety problems.
  • Reviews injury reports, accident investigations, and safety grievance reports; develops and reviews statistics, and evaluates the effectiveness of a safety program.
  • Oversees the inspection and evaluation of facilities, work on construction sites as it relates to departments renovations, equipment, work practices, and safety devices recommendation to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Formulates or participates in the formulation of departmental security policies and procedures and ensures their implementation.
  • Develops and implements specialized training programs tailored for hazards unique to the various job assignments within the departments.
  • Meets with employees and managers to study safety problems and develops policies and procedures minimize the risk of injury or loss.
  • Responds to employee concerns regarding work site safety.
  • Writes, maintains, and educates employees on work procedures, manuals, protocols, operational plans for safe and consistent performance of activities.
  • Represents the risk management at meetings, conferences and facility inspections conducted by authorized tribal or federal agencies.
  • Advises departmental management on equipment purchases and facility changes to implement safety and security goals.
  • Reviews reports of injuries, property damage, non-employee accidents, automotive and industrial accidents, and claims involving the department, and initiates appropriate action.
  • Acts as departmental liaison and coordinator with Worker’s Compensation and Legal Counsel on claims involving property/casualty cases.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices and guidelines.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.
  • Skill in investigating, preserving evidence related to accidents, fatalities or thefts.
  • Skill in utilizing public relations techniques when responding to requests, inquiries and complaints.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to plan and present safety training programs.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to learn Human Resources Information System, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc.
  • Ability to travel to meetings, seminars, and job fairs and work extended hours and on weekends as requested.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Safety and Occupational Health or closely related field, and three years’ work experience in Risk Management or in an insurance function of an organization, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand or sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may be exposed to dust, gas, fumes, vapors, loud noises and all types of weather.

Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
