Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Patient Transporter’s functions include positioning, transferring, and transporting patients to and from various departments or locations by wheelchair, bed, or gurney. This involves lifting, turning, and repositioning patients requiring moderate to total assistance. Transporter will also be trained and utilized as Telemetry technicians and Ava Sure tele sitter technicians when needed. Transporter may also perform teaching and training functions, dispatching functions, and limited clerical duties for the transport function. Other role requirements include supply delivery, equipment movement and maintenance and cleaning or disinfection, assisting with the department dispatcher as required, assisting in the management of decedent affairs, and other activities as directed. Assignments may vary between day and night shift, and participation in weekend coverage is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Transport patients by assisting patients in and out of transport cars, ambulances, helicopters; lifting patients on and off beds; moving them to and from special service and treatment areas, and operating rooms; using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
  2. Comfort patients and their families offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedures schedules; demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
  3. Reports changes in the patient to others for follow up.
  4. Cares for patients by assisting them to restrooms, providing bedpans, blankets, etc.
  5. Removes soiled linen and replenishes clean linen.
  6. Attends holding areas as requested.
  7. Assists patients and family members by responding to inquiries and providing information based on departmental and organizational policy.
  8. Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting others, cleans work areas, and transportation equipment, etc.
  9. Demonstrates standard of performance (ownership teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
  10. Transport equipment and supplies by picking-up specimens and delivering to specified laboratory.
  11. Transports deceased patients by following protocols and delivering them to the mortuary.
  12. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with federal regulations and Joint Commission requirements.
  13. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities
  14. Enhances health care organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  15. Customer service, customer focus, bedside manner, physical fitness, verbal communication, listening, documentation skills, decision making, patient services, health promotion and maintenance.
  16. Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  17. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates).
  18. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical:

This position is very active and requires strength to help lift or move patients and objects. Incumbent must have the ability to lift, push and pull up to 50lbs for a prolonged period of time, frequently lift up to 75lbs and occasionally lift, push and pull over 100lbs. A transporter must have the stamina to be on their feet all the day which includes prolonged sitting, standing, walking, and maintaining balance. Must have ability to frequently bend, kneel, twist and reach as well as occasionally drive, climb, and crouch. Sensory requirements for position include the prolonged ability for far, near, and color vision, depth perception and seeing fine details. Must have ability to hear normal speech, hear overhead pages, and use the telephone. Both hand manipulation is required for simple grasping, frequent firm grasping and fine manipulation. Must also have ability to occasionally use a keyboard.

Mental:

The transporter must be able to prioritize and use good judgement and must also be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. A transporter must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations. This position may require long hours and weekend coverage when assigned. Must have ability to continually work alone, frequently concentrate, handle a high degree of flexibility, demonstrate a high degree of patience, adapt to shift work, and work in areas that are close and crowded. May occasionally have ability to cope with high level of stress, make decisions under high pressure, cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, manage altercations, and handle multiple priorities in stressful situations.

Environmental:

May frequently be exposed to infectious diseases, chemical agents, and loud noises. Incumbent may occasionally be exposed to dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, and unprotected heights. 

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED

Certification:

Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association

Experience:

Must have one (1) year experience in a health care environment

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences
  • Able to respond appropriately in stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients, visitors, and staff
  • Knowledge of basic Medical terminology
  • Complete Telemetry Tech Training upon hire
  • Complete Ava Sure Tele Sitter Training hire
  • Completion of and, above-satisfactory scores on all job interviews, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the interviewees and TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Successful completion of fingerprint clearance requirements, physical examinations, and other screenings indicating that the applicant is qualified to be employed by TCRHCC and demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job
  • Submission of all required employment-related documents, applications, resumes, references, and other required information free of false, misleading or incomplete information, as determined by TCRHCC
