SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Advocacy & Government Affairs, the Advocacy Coordinator supports and facilitates relationships between Opportunity Village (OV) and the families of people served by Opportunity Village. These relationships may extend beyond a family to guardians and or other external partnerships.  

The Advocacy Coordinator provides and coordinates support and activities with families that foster engagement and overall well-being. The Advocacy Coordinator encourages all family members to be engaged in Opportunity Village, support its programs, as well as support fundraising and social activities.

The Advocacy Coordinator assists in providing training, support, and scheduling OV’s Ambassador Corps to engage the greater community and develop the skillsets of the group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensures a trusting, collaborative, partnership building process is implemented with each family who is seeking services for their loved one or who is engaged in services. 
  2. Respect the diverse values and cultures of the families served.
  3. Recognize and identify each family’s needs and desired services. 
  4. Establish professional roles and boundaries in working with families.
  5. Recognize and promote family’s readiness and willingness to participate in the program.    
  6. Facilitate parent/guardian involvement in the program, activities, and fundraising events including volunteerism and financial support.  
  7. Actively participate in community resource planning and related work to establish and foster strong partnerships. Maximize resources through community collaboration.
  8. Works closely with the case management team to ensure quality of service and supports while cultivating family engagement.
  9. Facilitates educational opportunities, support groups, and referrals.
  10. Conveys a clear understanding of the organization’s mission and vision.
  11. Researches and understands issues faced by those with intellectual disabilities.
  12. Works in coordination with state agencies and community organizations.
  13. Attends community events as needed.
  14. Assists with the continued development of Ambassadors and the utilization of that role in advocacy efforts.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Administrative Duties

  1. Provide administrative support services and office management to the Advocacy Department. 
  2. Assist with calendaring and scheduling in the Advocacy Department using independent judgment and discretion when scheduling all requested appointments and daily updates.
  3. Assist with scheduling, preparing, and setting up all tours and meetings for the Advocacy Department, confirming all appointments, conference dates, agendas, catering functions and location set up, as well as preparation of presentations and training materials.

 

Outreach

  • Host tours, visits, meetings and events for community leaders and members to improve awareness of Opportunity Village.
  • Assist in resolving complaints, issues, and concerns pertaining to services received/provided.
  • Engage families in programs, activities, and fundraising events including volunteerism and financial support.
  • Assist families in tracking and follow up of internal and external requests for services and assistance.
  • Responsible for the planning of outreach events, facilitating social & support groups, and educational opportunities for families.
  • Participate in community events and coalitions. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides direction and leadership to OV Ambassadors.

 

 

 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, family members, co-workers, community members, etc. (verbal and written).
  • Must possess social perceptiveness to assess and understand other’s reactions and behaviors.
  • Strong ability to help individuals and families solve and cope with problems
  • Exhibit flexibility in day-to-day operations and in providing needed services to families.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with agency policy and according to federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Highly organized and has the ability to prioritize to meet scheduled deadlines and perform routine tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Possess and maintain the necessary skill level in technology systems and software required to perform individual job duties.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of and the ability to effectively use communications tools (e.g., telephone system, e-mail, fax, etc.).
  • Must have critical thinking skills and be able to work independently.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Non-Profit Management, Social Services or related field or equivalent work experience in a similar role.
  • Required: Five years’ experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Preferred: Three years’ experience working in Social Services, Case Management Non-Profit agency or related field.
  • Required: Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally and out of state.
  • Required: Current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification or ability to acquire certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Required: Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification or ability to acquire certification within 90 days of hire.

  • Ability to conduct tasks and successfully perform under critical deadlines.
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and examine documents, records and files.
