About the Organization Established June 15, 1971, Valley Community Services Board is a publicly funded organization where citizens of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta and Highland Counties can receive Behavioral Health, Substance Use and Developmental Services services. Valley Community Services Board serves as the single point of entry into publicly funded mental health, developmental, and substance use disorder services for these localities.

Description

VCSB is looking for our next Peer Recovery Specialist! A Peer is a partner who provides support to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. As part of the Adult Mental Health Services team, the Peer plays a vital part in an individual's road to recovery by acting as a bridge between the individual and their treatment providers.

Summary of Essential Functions

  • Conducts regular reviews of clients' strengths and needs.
  • Helps clients develop and utilize healthy coping mechanisms, positive self-management techniques, problem-solving skills, symptom management, and effective communication skills.
  • Supports the development of self-advocacy skills through person-centered, strengths-based recovery planning and goal setting.
  • Empowers clients to take a direct, proactive role in developing and updating their ISP and Recovery Resiliency Wellness Plan.
  • Provides crisis support as needed in partnership with other team members.
  • Coordinates treatment services with other agencies, including, but not limited to, education, consultation, and technical assistance as needed.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the following in order to be considered qualified for the position.

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must have lived experience pertaining to mental health or substance use challenges, meaning:
    • Personally experienced mental health or substance use challenges and currently celebrating at least one year of recovery, or
    • Closely related to or a guardian for an individual who experiences mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with a points balance of at least 0 or obtain a valid Virginia driver's license within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

The most competitive candidates have one or more of the following additional qualifications.

  • Previous experience working in mental health or substance use treatment.
  • Currently certified as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic human needs and rights.
    • Community resources, services, and systems.
    • 12-Step programs and other self-help recovery models.
    • Substance use and co-occurring disorders.
    • Office-based and medication-assisted treatment practices.
    • Basic crisis intervention techniques.
    • Use of medications in the care or treatment of substance use and co-occurring disorders.
    • Appropriate professional behavior.
  • Skills pertaining to:
    • Ongoing review of a client's ability to adequately maintain themself in the community.
    • Connecting clients to appropriate resources available through public and private providers.
    • Effective oral and written communication.
    • Organization, prioritization, and time-management.
    • Identifying and documenting a client's need for resources, treatment, and other supports.
    • Crisis intervention.
    • Advocating for and empowering others.
  • Ability to:
    • Work effectively with clients experiencing mental health or substance use challenges.
    • Communicate clearly and professionally.
    • Work independently and recognize when additional help is necessary.
    • Demonstrate sound judgment.
    • Adhere to professional ethical standards.
    • Collaborate with team members and other stakeholders.
 
Salary Information Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
