JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the General Manager (GM) of the Wellness Center, the Fitness Supervisor is responsible for hiring, training, and managing the fitness staff, including the exercise specialists, personal trainers, and swim lesson instructors. The Fitness Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the member experience for new members (fitness assessment/initial workout) and existing members (program reviews), personal training program, coordination of all clinical fitness programs, daily/weekly scheduling of the fitness staff, maintenance of exercise equipment, and member retention efforts. Approximately 25-50% of work hours should be dedicated to administrative tasks, while the remaining 50-75% of work hours should be used for the same type of member appointments as the rest of the Exercise Specialist team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises the operation of the fitness areas, as they directly relate to the staff, programs, and facility.
  • Develops and facilitates the new member orientation process which includes a physiological assessment, personalized exercise prescription, and facility equipment orientation.
  • Develops and facilitates the ongoing member retention strategy, including utilization tracking, identifying low users for review appointments, and providing other member communications.
  • Develops and manages the clinically-integrated programs, utilizing resources and key customers from other hospital departments and in conjunction with the medical director’s oversight.
  • Develops and manages the personal training program to meet or exceed both member and budgetary expectations.
  • Develops and maintains a system for documenting and repairing malfunctioning exercise equipment, to ensure that equipment is not down longer than 48 hours without repairs being initiated.
  • Develops and maintains a system to facilitate equipment cleanliness and preventative maintenance.
  • Develops and coordinates new employee orientation and is responsible for on-going employee training.
  • Develops a wide range of educational seminars/workshops and incentive-based challenges for members.
  • Works with the GM to implement a promotional/marketing strategy to generate maximum participation in all fitness activities and programs.
  • Conducts employee performance evaluations and ongoing training workshops for staff, focusing on safety, service, integration, and professional development.
  • Conducts employee rounding sessions on a regular basis (monthly for full time staff, quarterly for all others).
  • Monitors the purchasing of fitness supplies and equipment to ensure uninterrupted productivity.
  • Works with the GM to develop the annual fitness budget and manages the department to comply with the budget.
  • Attends weekly management meetings and conducts regular team meetings.
  • Maintains responsibility for ongoing positive communications with peers, supervisors, and employees, and adheres to all Wellness Center policies.
  • Follows hospital and department policies and procedures as a role model for and with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress codes, and display of ID badge.
  • Functions as MOD as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology/science or other related field required.
  • BLS (Basic Life Saving)/CPR certification required.
  • Nationally accredited fitness certification required, ACSM preferred.
  • One year general management experience preferred in a community, commercial or hospital-based fitness center.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and customer service related skills required.
